  1. I forgot the best part though - whoever first owned this Xrs really put some money into it.

it has a nice cold air intake, short throw shifter, and a fuel management module connected to the air intake so that it still idles properly when you mess with the throttle response settings.

I don’t know how much power it actually adds, but it was completely un-detectable during the test drive, and feels like it’s been professionally tuned.

even the LED under-body lights are wired up well, and the switches are installed discretely. It’s ridiculous, but totally hidden, until i get drunk and start having the car do “party tricks” in the driveway.

i used the mods to negotiate the sale price down. The car has sat on 3?lots for a total of almost 5 YEARS. I flat-out told the sales mgr, “you bought this at auction because it’s a really clean corolla with 68,000 miles on it.  I’m betting you got it for $5500, but didn’t realize it was a manual transmission.  The car fax says it’s sat here since May, after being on two other lots for a long time. This is a $7500 car. That’s a fair price, and leaves you enough meat on the bone to pocket something, but we both know that The market for a 5-speed corolla is very limited.”

technically the sale price was $8100, but they gave me $900 for the 2003 corolla, which had over 236,000 miles on it.

  2. Stumbled upon this thread.

I’ve landed on my feet pretty well. Upgraded houses - or rather, school districts.  Moved in with GF. Got engaged. Bought China grom, bought SV650 race bike, bought corolla XRS manual, and am a lot happier, in spite of Covid BS.

The Lexus was a casualty of the house upgrade, but i couldn’t pass it up for the deal I got, and honestly, the kids would have destroyed the interior.

loving the XRS too. It’s not fast or fancy, but it’s markedly better than my old car in every way (not that that was a high bar). Even so, i got everything i said i wanted: 40 more horsepower, power windows, cruise control, a manual transmission, and a nicer stereo - that runs on 87 octane.

it’s entertaining, and the SV is in the garage to be truly fast ...at least compared to cars.

  3. I’m a fucking moron, but so are the people who assemble these bikes.

The crank case breather was routed in an asinine manner, causing it to kink.

the resulting pressure was pushing out the o-ring on the clutch side that seals the part that depresses he clutch springs.

so i was leaking oil from a cover not meant to have oil behind it. Rerouting the breather tube and re-seating the o-ring solved the issue completely.

It’s still shockingly slow (49 on GPS), but not broken in yet, and i have a larger front sprocket, and will put a better carb and an exhaust on it. Chinese parts are $30 for the carb and $50 for the exhaust, hahahahaha

  4. After 21.6 somewhat eventful miles, my Chinese Grom clone is leaking oil from The right side engine vase cover.

the engine is so generic that it has a screw-on cover where it can be branded differently. The gasket behind mine seems to be failing, and leaks oil when the bike is warm.

i am concerned that i will round out the screws if i try any harder to remove the cover to inspect it. Laying the bike against a milk crate in the garage sure is easier with a 125 though.

anyway, i can’t ever see myself accessing this cover for maintenance. Any reason i shouldn’t just JB weld the entire seem?  Maybe try RVT first to see if that works?

  5. I’ll grid at the back and take a DQ so

as not to mess with anyone’s points, but there is no way that a grom clone will out perform a grom.

I figure i can get close to stock grom

performance after new tires, a better carb, and an exhaust, but the grom costs double for a reason.

  6. Anecdotally, take a look at Japan and California.

masks, due to smog and viral concerns, were common in Japan well before Coronavirus. CA and Japan are roughly the same size, and have similar populations and population density.

Look at their daily case figures. Even with inconsistencies in the rate of testing, there is a clear correlation that masks are effective at reducing the rate of transmission.

you can still debate whether or not the fatality rate rationalizes mask mandates or not, but the masks WILL reduce transmission.

I won’t miss wearing one, but it only really bothers me when i get somewhere and realize i forgot mine.

  7. the R6 master arrived 2 days early, AND, it’s a Brembo. Didn’t even see that when i bid on it.

i have functioning brakes, but they’re not as firm as i would like.

encountered some issues removing the wheels, since i have never messed with a Suzuki before, but they’re off, and i am hopeful that reinstallation goes a bit smoother now that i sort of have a clue about how things go together.

A couple guys brought their 125cc 2-strokes out last time I was at MidOh... those were fun to watch, and smell, and pass.  They were super complimentary on how courteous the passes were. 🤣

Circling back though... your OG plan to get her a Gen1 SV has my vote.  Pros -- spare bike if YOU need it, plenty fast, fun for riders from n00bz to advanced at any trackday.  Cons -- I suppose first gens are slightly harder to find in decent condition, but other than that, I see almost zero downsides.

One of them was my friend Jeff.
