New endeavor - Milky Way Shots

Hey guys, been trying out a new thing that I've wanted to do, this winter really got into doing research on how to do it. Learnin' myself. March is really the first time the Milky Way core is visible for the year, combined with 3 days in a row of great weather. The results, other than sleep depreivation (wake up at 4am, then go to real work), are posted below. Some shots are not milky way shots, those were some of my scouting shots.

Absolutely thrilled with the results. The shot with the cabin and the lookout tower are being submitted for an Indiana DNR photo contest. Really hope I can win it! But I'm being very optimistic.

How long is the exposure?

Its 30seconds @ 1600 ISO (with an F2.8 lens).

Basically 30 seconds (at the focal length I'm at) is the limit for when you start to blur the stars, due to their movement.

I had to do a fair amount of surface blurring to get rid of some of the graininess, but i think next time I will try a shot at 400 ISO for the foreground (@ several minute exposure), and melt them together.

Happy to help with any noise reduction via various techniques. Just PM me.

I got a few of astro photo noise reduction tips if your interested. Your trouble is going to be going beyond 30 seconds you'll start to hit the limit on light pollution and there is only so much you can do about that.

Very nice photos though.

If you want to do some work get a motorized telescope mount to eliminate the star trails, a light pollution filter, and do some fun photoshop work and you could get photos that no one else will know how to you did it. Will be sort of like going back to the darkroom for your creations.
