Otis Nice
Just saw the other pics. That's a great workshop Grant.
Geeesammy
So I decided to leave the floor alone after seeing how it looked with a darker paint and updated baseboards. I cleaned it a few times with water/vinegar and this weekend I think I will hit it with some floor restore that people go nutty over on Amazon. I grabbed a miter saw, and got an absolute steal on a 6gal air compressor, brad nail gun, 3 other nailers and a finish nailer at menards for like $240. It's this but obviously was on sale https://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/power-tools-accessories/air-compressors-pneumatic-tools-accessories/air-compressors/bostitch-reg-5-tool-air-compressor-combo-kit/btfp5kit/p-1487920825770.htm Went with a slightly taller baseboard, I wanted to do 6" but I thought it would look funny with the vent heights so I went to a 4"ish height. Need to do the bedrooms and office still, but office is needing paint and I bought everything Menards had as far as this trim goes. I also switched over to white receptacle covers instead of that nasty 60's almond white, while I was at it I instead 20ish new receptacles. Over half in the house had issues grabbing my tester tightly and all were backstabs instead of screws. Definitely need to paint the doors white and maybe even update the door trim, or at least paint it white. That should be a bit easier than the baseboard trim though. LJ
I would just spend the money and get new prehung doors and trim.
TTQ B4U
I would just spend the money and get new prehung doors and trim. ^^ this. If money is tight, just paint them. Do the doors the same color as the walls and trim white. That would buy you some time before you change them out. Overall, congrats on the purchase and nice work on all that you've done so far! cruizin01
I recommend Insl-x cabinet coat for doors and trim if you want something that holds up really well. It goes on pretty thin and takes a few coats but takes abuse very well compared to latex.
2 Sweet
So, I decided to repaint the drywall part of my garage, it was originally a flat bright white. I bought semi-gloss off-white for the top, semi-gloss silver for the bottom, and semi-gloss orange for a stripe. I got the fancy paint+primer stuff and went to town..... I painted the top first, the bottom second, then masked off where I wanted the stripe and painted the stripe last. Well, yesterday I just happened to rub my knuckle down the wall, and it "caught" the top edge of the stripe and pulled the paint back. I grabbed it and literally pulled the entire stripe off the wall in one long chunk..... What the hell did I do wrong? Too may coats of orange? Should I have used a primer? I'm assuming this time I need to paint the orange stripe, THEN mask off the stripe and paint the top/bottom edges (white/silver) after the stripe? Semi-Gloss needs to be de-glossed before painting over it. Paint won't properly bond to it and in time will crack too. Did it remove the semi gloss too? Wait 24hrs, then use Yellow Frog Tape, tape off the top and bottom areas and put on some primer or your orange paint if it has primer in it. May take 2 coats to level off. Yellow frog tape is good stuff but don't press it down super hard and do so on the leading edge. Use care when pulling it off. The only time I had a problem with it pulling up paint is on our bathroom that was done in Eggshell. I should have waited longer to paint but I needed to finish. Wasn't a problem but I had to use care removing it off paint that was 24hrs old.
Red Beard
That's odd. Did you wipe down and clean the wall first? Makes me wonder if there was something on there that was keeping it from adhering properly. It could have also been due to the humidity too. If the outside layer flashed over and trapped all the moisture/solvent in the stripe it could cause it to peel like that. At least it came off in one solid stripe and not a little here or there. much easier to fix that way.

I wouldn't say money is tight, I'm just a super cheap ass and if I can make it work as is I will. I've already gotta replace 2 doors and just don't wanna drop a grand or two on doors right now if I don't need to. Thanks Tim!
Not Brian
Moving in a week. My only neighbor owns the 10 acres behind me and is building a mcmansion back there to move into and rent his current house. The driveway he's building slides against my property so I asked him if he could include all the grass between our drives for a big turnaround spot/extra parking for a few bucks. He said sure. Here's a (not so great) pic he took of it in the works
Red Beard
Nice! Gotta love when neighbors are willing to help each other out. is he leaving it gravel or planning on blacktopping it?
Not Brian
Gravel for now but I may spend the thousands needed to cover it with asphalt if it gets annoying down the road. I just wanted a turnaround area since I'll have a bunch of cars parked there and don't feel like backing out 100ft onto a 50mph road. zeitgeist57
I’ve got some rotten 6x6’s surrounding an elevated brick patio that need replacing. I have fallen in love with Menard’s, and I’d like to take advantage of their 11% rebate program to get new timbers. They had some cheap 6x6 landscaping timbers, but the item had been discontinued. To fit the original size there isn’t any premium to go with recycled plastic timbers. Has anyone used plastic boards larger than a 2”x4”? https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/landscaping-materials/landscaping-timbers/6-x-6-x-8-waterproof-plastic-timber/6x6x8brpl/p-1454045334257-c-12369.htm?tid=1877648851828902067&ipos=

They are non-structural beams but are pretty stout. They were sturdy enough to use them to support the deck corners. So I'm sure they will work fine as a landscaping timber. You can cut them and drill them just like regular wood too. So if you want to run lag bolts to tie them together you can do that with ease. zeitgeist57
With the dimensions of the 6x6s (both plastig in the link above, as well as the rotten timbers in my patio) being 5.5" x 5.5", I may end up going with the 5x5's for almost 1/3 the cost. I need to replace a lot of these timbers as I have stairs and some elevations as well.
Red Beard
That is what I would do. Especially since the price difference is worth it. The finish height of the timber can be adjusted with some aggregate underneath of it anyway. making up a half inch per post wouldn't be hard to do. As long as the actual dimensions for the plastic are 6x6 or 5x5 and not labelled as such but in actuality shrunken down to match the same dimensions that finished wood would be. I.E. 6x6 wooden post being 5.5x5.5 in actuality.

Skinner
Well had a issue with our upstairs toilet overflowing. got insurance to come out and gut all the damage, decided it was time to redo all the flooring in the house. Redid all the bathrooms and laundry room with a hardwood/vinyl called Nucore because it was waterproof. and redid all the carpet in the house . Flooring turned out so nice we decided to do our main level of the house with it. Living room and foyer. before. http://i.imgur.com/GYXj4bg.jpg http://i.imgur.com/CFVUnQE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wCmtVXf.jpg upstairs after http://i.imgur.com/xKCITqR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Wcu9231.jpg downstairs I did myself since we were doing more than what insurance would cover. All the carpet was the orginal that we had when the house was build it was def time to have it removed was nasty. http://i.imgur.com/jkODHMm.jpg http://i.imgur.com/MgjNHhe.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ghrkq8U.jpg http://i.imgur.com/uRBjhxj.jpg Added Luan to raise up the floor so there would be no transitions. http://i.imgur.com/6lU4SZh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/WvBIZhC.jpg you can see where the ins stopped with what needed replaced got busy laying it. http://i.imgur.com/IqD3mh8.jpg http://i.imgur.com/X7SGuHI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Q7LsNJU.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wHUVQRv.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6JcXNNH.jpg Finished. http://i.imgur.com/jFRYBSt.jpg http://i.imgur.com/jFRYBSt.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4dPZh6O.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4dPZh6O.jpg replaced trim with 6" and casing with 4" and cased the window as well. http://i.imgur.com/216JtTP.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fTyNyxf.jpg Still working on trimming everything out but will have that done by this weekend when I have time.
