Oculus Quest 2/VR headsets

Ok, my son (he’s 12) actually managed to save up $300 for a dam VR headset and he has his eye on the oculus 2. I know nothing about this crap, but I’m trying to be supportive. I just don’t want this to be a total train wreck, but he’s adamant about getting one. What are the gotchas here? He has a PC but it’s older, GTX970 maybe vid card, 500gb ssd and 8 or 16gb ram so it’s ok but no new machine. Does he need that to play? What about games? Are there titles he can play out of the box or will he need hundreds more for content?

The Quest 2 is a standalone headset, he does not need a PC to play, but you can plug it into your PC and use it to play PC VR games too.

Games range in price, but there are a lot of sales and they occasionally credit your account $10 or give you 30% off to get you to buy more. I'm not sure I've bought anything at regular price. There is a huge sale going on until Jan 2 on a lot of titles.

I had a referral code that could have got you $60 in credits for games. It may still be going, so if he's serious and going to buy/set up his quest before Jan 2nd let me know.

Let me know if you have other questions. I have had a Quest 2 since last Nov. I'm just a casual gamer though.

If he's a lil fatty he'll play for a week then it'll collect dust on a shelf. It's a hell of a workout dodging bullets and shooting around corners.
Yeah, especially something like CREED on Endurance Mode. Not everything is super physical though.

I expect this TBH. He’s not active, but I think he WANTS to play games from PC on it. He likes some car mechanic simulator and I’m guessing that’s what’s spurring it, I just expect his PC to be too shitty to handle it and I’m not buying him a $3k video card FFS. If it’s him in a VR world tinkering, building a PC or something I can see him totally digging that, but physically being active? Fucking LOL.

I’m trying to educate myself as much as I can so I can explain why he’s gonna hate it instead of my wife just thinking he should go for it. I know he has the attention span of a squirrel, endurance of a dead battery and the thrive to keep trying like roadkill but my wife doesn’t get it.

Hotdogs horeshoes and handgrenades?

Roblox?

So far this is all he has come up with, but whatever.

Yeah, both of these will need to be played on PC with the Quest plugged in. They do not run natively on Quest.

Does it need a lot of PC power to run or does the oculus handle it?
In this case the Oculus is just a display and the PC does all the heavy lifting. I'm not up on my PC specs enough to tell you if it's good enough.

If you go with an OG Oculus Rift CV2 headset; which the headset is available on ebay pretty cheap, I'll give you my two controllers and 3 base stations. My headset died, so I have these sitting unused.

I moved on to a Reverb G2, but the Rift is still a perfectly good unit.

I have the quest 2 and love it. I personally don't see many drawbacks to it. You can spend a shit ton on games, but I don't, and I don't think you need to. I really like the fact that it's dual purpose, so it can be stand alone or tethered. If the PC isn't up to the task he can still play stand alone until he can upgrade his video card. I have an older 1070ti and it does just fine. The only thing I do with it tethered is iRacing, everything else is stand alone. I was curious about watching 3d movies, so I picked up the Avatar 3D version and converted it to run on the headset. The process wasn't terrible, and it does work pretty well. When you guys are traveling he could download movies onto the headset and sit in the back seat and zone out. I don't know if he is someone who would get into VR chat, but I'm not sure that would be a super good idea. I've heard it can be pretty fun, but I've also heard it can get pretty raunchy and sometimes downright nasty.

I’m fully expecting this to be a failboat/paperweight but when you get $300 for Christmas and saving from your birthday, what better thing to do than piss that money away right? He’ll never save enough to upgrade his PC and I’ll be expected to but that ain’t happening. This is going to be a hard lesson in what happens to your “hard earned” money I’m guessing.

Just make sure he knows that if he's watching VR porn he won't be able to tell when someone walks in on him. He is a teenager, after all.

This is probably the most common thing posted on the Facebook Oculus group page.

I tried the porn thing. Everything feels too close to the camera and it makes me go cross-eyed and strains my eyes. Anyway, try http://www.vrporn.com for yourself for free videos.
Yeah, I never felt like having someone's ass hole 6 inches in front of my face in 3D was what was missing from a "flat screen" porn experience.

Well the wife is back there helping him set it up. I’m in the doghouse as usual so……
Lol, good luck. If you need some game recommendations just say so.

Did you use my referral link? Another friend of mine used it on Christmas and got $60 in Oculus Store credit.

Yeah I think she used it, not sure how it works because she’s handling it.

Edit, she said yes he got $60 credit also. Thanks!

Great! And thanks, I should get something in return too, but it takes a few hours.

Any recommendations for a decent cable? I’m sure anything labeled as “oculus” has the appropriate tax on it. We tried one we have here and it’s not even making a connection so it’s probably a cheap China cord not worth a shit. I have an anker but it’s only 6’, I’m guessing 10 or even 15 would be better but given all the cheap cords I don’t want to waste money on a million just to find one that might work.
