  1. Hey Monte - long time no see!

I have no doubt that Richard is going to do a great job, as you and Bonnie have for as long as I've ridden with STT - I just feel that there are sometimes conflicts between what's best for the customers and what's best for the business.

the simple example is having a full event. Financially, you want every group to be full. That's good for business. I totally understand that. But from a rider's perspective, having 10 empty spots in each group gives us a lot more for our money, and ultimately allows the riders to have more fun, and (i would argue) learn more.

It's an inevitable give-and-take, and I know STT has always, and will continue to pursue the best balance possible. But that's always been the goal; thus why I said I don't expect many significant changes. It wasn't meant to be a criticism.

Totally understand and thanks for the comments and for riding with STT.

  2. Monte's post was still pretty vague. He calls Richard a "major shareholder," but doesn't say "majority" share holder. I think there's also the strong implication that Monte and Bonnie are retaining at least some ownership interest. (for now?)

I've yet to hear a bad word about Richard Harris; even after seeing his name sprinkled all over the WERA board! In that crowd, I would have expected someone to hate the guy :p I'm encouraged.

but I have to think that there will be few, if any, meaningful changes at STT as far as the customers are concerned.

From a business perspective, I am going to assume that Richard purchased interest in STT because it's profitable - so I doubt he's going to mess with a successful business model. That's too bad. I think there's always room for improvement.

Richard is a fantastic guy in many capacities. I look forward to working with and for him well nto the future.

Have no doubt that Richard has some fantastic fresh ideas for STT. I started the whole track day thing over twelve years ago, maybe it was thirteen, I can't recall, but STT in it's current form is in it's tenth full year and Richard has been riding and coaching with us that entire time. He knows STT nearly as well as Bonnie and me. The time is right for someone like Richard to take over the helm.

Our baby called STT has grown up and sometimes one must come to the realization, however hard that might be, that there are people out there who can do a better job of taking the STT to the next level and bringing positive change (while keeping all of the great attributes) to the org which makes it a better experience for our members.

It's been one helluva ride with lots of ups and downs as well but the positives so far outweigh the negatives that its crazy. Bonnie and I have had the honor and privilege of getting to know so many great people, not just on the track but off the track as well and those friendships will last a lifetime.

I have a hunch that the next ten years of STT are going to be every bit as dynamic as the first ten and that STT members will benefit greatly.

  3. Ok thanks iam going to see what i can find out. But the thing i dont understand is that why would they let my buddy sign up being his first track day ever?

Their staff is mostly new... they have an high turn over rate in the front office. 100% IIRC in the last 18 months or so..

Well........I'm the guy who invented every format at Mid-Ohio and wrote the rules for them. We had a terrible time with the MAX Times because the office could not understand what EXPERIENCED meant and riders don't always tell the truth either.

  6. So how many sessions did you all get? I'm hesitant to sign up for one of these if its $150, they don't check to make sure everyone meets their stated criteria, and you're only getting 1.5hrs of track time. Oh and not knowing beforehand if its open track or sessions.

This is the course discription as shown on the Mid-Ohio website:

Max-Time Twilight Events: Open to experienced INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED riders. Intermediate riders will take the track for one 15 minute warm up session and then the advanced riders will do the same. Following the warm up sessions, all riders will be on track at the same time for the remainder of the event. Instructors will still be available to assist you at any time and the checkered flag will fly every 1/2 hour to insure that you come into the pits, take a break and get a drink before heading back out for more fun. To enroll in one of these events you should have ridden in intermediate or advanced levels at least 3 times in the past 12 months. This is to make sure you are comfortable riding with intermediate and advanced riders at the same time. These events have a riding start time of 5:00pm and an end time of DUSK. Remember, that means the ending time will vary depending on what month of the year these events are held.

  7. I wasn't going to bring it up, but that's not what the staff was saying.

While I was in line to get my "I" sticker, Mike came into the tech shed and told Dennis that he needed to move "at least 7 or 8" riders from "I" group to "A" group.

I walked out with an "A" sticker because my bike is prepped for "A" rules.

That would mean that phone orders got taken and then the "inventory" didn't get adjusted in the website... that's not good and we're supposed to have that handled.

I'mm check it out and make a dummy event and do some testing. I don't like that happening.

  8. yes thanks for the hook up...hopefully next time it wont be over booked : (

Our rider limits at GingerMan are 110 total broken up as 35 N 40 I and 35 A and that's what we had. We were not overbooked

I think that fact that GingerMan does not have a ginormous straight that lets riders get sorted out bunched riders up a bit. Our I group was pretty "clumpy".

  9. I was not blaming the format just suggested it contributed to a series of poor judgments on my part that led to my accident which was completely my fault.

It was the first time for me in the advanced group and I was looking forward to getting some time with faster guys in hopes of improving my time. I was running with another guy down the back straight when suddenly there were five guys across the track braking or slowing down for the right hand turn at the end of it. I hadn't seen them in front of us through the keyhole so I didn't expect any traffic in front of us. The guy I was running with went to the inside of them all and cut a few off I'm sure. I could have split a few of them and made it but it would have been tight and aggressive. I chose to go outside them all to keep from freaking them out and coming too close to them. This caused me to change my braking marker and I had too much trail braking happening going on trying to ride around them all on the outside, I tucked my front.

Stupid mistake on my part and totally my fault for not paying attention to what was in front of me. I should have expected the situation and I didn't leave enough in reserve to avoid it. I should have changed my expectations of what I wanted out of the track time as soon as I knew both groups were going to be running together.

I understand you and Lizard have more experience and these situations don't come up for you and now so do I so this same thing won't be happening to me again.

I understand now that you posted this. Sorry about your bad luck. Are you ok? Bike not too messed up I hope?

  10. Not sure how they would keep people from signing up that are not experienced intermediate but it would obviously be ideal if we could come and go on the track as we please and this was originally what I was hoping for. 20 minute sessions are a nice amount of time to get some riding in but not go so long that you are super tired. Only thing that sucks is that you then have to wait 40 minutes to get back on track thats what is appealing about the MAX time events. Oh well, maybe next time.

It is easy...you have Intermediate riders call in and talk to someone who can screen them.

  11. I like the fact that the time is split and it would make me come back to twilight events. I am not blaming anyone other than myself for my accident last year but it was in part caused by my inability to deal with a crowded track of much slower riders. I have always been on the track with like skilled riders and understood what to expect from others. Having different passing rules than what you are used to then having a rolling road block in front of you where you don't expect it makes it hard to honor the passing rules and safely slow down to make it past the slower riders.

It's funny how slower riders never give me a problem.. Lizard.. same deal. I mean if you can't pull off good clean passes with three to four feet at a track as wide as Mid-Ohio you'll never be able to.

What's so hard about giving someone three solid feet on a pass? Those were the rules we used iin 09 and 08... Is that not enough room, do you need it t be closer? Seriously, I'm just wondering.

I loved the format (duh.. that's why I came up with it...) that allowed riders to come and go as thy please and sneak a "day" of riding in in a few hours.

In my experience the things that detract from this format are over booking and riders getting out on the track that absolutely were/are not solid Intermediates (something STT did not control when at Mid-Ohio) this format was a blast.

  12. When I created this format (yep.....this was my brainchild...) it was intended to be a 15 min warm up for I and 15 min warm up for A and then open track until dusk. It was also for EXPERIENCED Intermediate and Advanced riders only and would only work if not overbooked. The limit I set that I felt was safe and fun was 45 riders total pretty much equally divided between I and A riders..

By spliting the groups into two (I and A) the venue can increase the amount of riders and make a a lot more money. Of course you get only half the track time and then it's not a Maxtime event it is more of a three session LED. Still a fun evening of rocking the track!

  13. my lower was full of water from Sunday and when I took off it left a nice slick cold puddle or water for his ice cold hard rubber ( 40 degree's out) and he got in the gas like he like's to do, next thing u know him and the bike were a few feet in the air... broke the case, oil all over broke the plastic and the windscreen.

Ok.... so we leave or bike out in the rain and forget to check the belly pan. So isn't this an item that would be caught and handled an Tech inspection... Also.. at events where it has rained or people who have driven there in the rain are present a good riders meeting will make reference multiple times to checking your belly pans for water.

Anyway Rookie mistake guy's a noobe I am sure... after the he gets a couple of track days under his belt he'll figure this stuff out.

  14. Chucklehead isn't a bad term per se.... we've all suffered fom it. I can see it now.... cold tires and if they left the bike out and it got rained on then they had a belly pan full of water... Braaaaap... Braaaaap.. (little bit of lean and water sloshes out on the rear tire) Zzzzzzzzzzing... Arggggggggggh!!!!!!!! BAM!
