This common goal doesn’t mean that choosing a helmet is easy, however. The shear number of options and features can make shopping for one a daunting task. Luckily there are helmets like the Bell RS-1 out there to help simplify things. The Bell RS-1 is a jack-of-all-trades that comes from boiling down many features from the top-of-the-line Bell Star into a mid-range helmet. Don’t let the mid-range designation fool you though, as it punches well above its weight (especially at this sale price!). The Bell RS-1 is a SNELL M2010 and DOT approved helmet that sits in a sweet spot, both performance and price-wise. The sleek, aggressively shaped shell is made from a Kevlar/Fiberglass composite that makes it both strong and lightweight. The RS-1’s shell cuts a profile that is similar to that of the Bell Star, which results in an excellent aerodynamic balance that keeps buffeting to a minimum. Air also flows through the helmet very well. The Velocity Flow Ventilation system is adjustable and quietly keeps your head cool. Internally, the Bell RS-1 is a comfortable place to be. The lining and cheek pads feel very plush on the skin, right out of the box. They also break in quickly. An Agion Antibacterial treatment helps keep things fresh, but the lining is fully removable and washable in case things get a bit too sweaty. The RS-1 comes with a clear NutraFog II anti-fog/anti-scratch shield, which is the same as the Star. The ClickRelease shield mechanism is also shared, making for shield changes that can be done in seconds. As of this post, there is no other helmet that can do everything that the Bell RS-1 is capable of for anywhere near our sale price of $179. Bell has released all new 2014 colorways for their Star Carbon line including this graphic from Chris Wood of Airtrix, the Airtrix Boogie. What’s most noticeable on this particular graphic is the mixture of gloss and matte finishes showing off the carbon weave underneath. The gloss red, grey, and silver graphics are separated by a gold flake pin stripe. As with the previous Bell Star Carbon helmets, this version uses an outer shell that is made from 100% carbon fiber. Bell spent a great deal of time engineering the shell to be not only lightweight and strong, but very aerodynamic as well. What they came up with was an angular shape with a uniquely contoured spoiler, both of which make this helmet extremely stable and resistant to buffeting. Air is also directed into the variety of strategically placed vents at the front in order to push warm, stale air out through the exhaust vents at the back. All vents are independently adjustable so that you can dial in the ventilation for a variety of conditions. Another feature that goes unchanged is the shield system. The Star Carbon uses their fog and scratch resistant NutraFog II face shield in order to keep your view clear. It’s also treated with a potent anti-UV coating so that you don’t have to worry about your face being burnt red after a day’s ride in the sun. Bell’s 3Mode Shield allows you to quickly lock the visor down, crack it open for added ventilation and swap out faceshields with no tools required. And don’t forget to ask about a Bell Transitions SolFX Photochromatic faceshield available from Riders Discount. These visors have the same great benefits of the included unit, but also change their tint based upon lighting conditions. They darken quickly (~10 seconds) when the sun is out for squint-free daytime riding. New from Bell is an update on the widely popular Bell Rogue helmet, the Corey Miller War Eagle edition is available from Riders Discount. LA Ink's Corey Miller added his flair to the Bell Rogue with dueling war eagles, a dagger in the back, and wings surrounding the Bell logo in front.
