Boost-n-Juice
'01 Focus, 60k miles. Wife complains of a shimmy and knocking noise in the steering. This can be felt in the steering wheel and chassis of the car. I pulled the driver's side wheel (where she says the noise is) and I can grab the caliper and move it back and forth about 1/4". No play in the outer tie rod, the play seems to be in the rack and pinion. Is this normal? Any ideas? Seems awfully early for the rack to go bad. ridenred27
put the log nuts back on the rotor before you check for play. the focus has floting rotors and that is the play you are feeling. once they are back on recheck for play, you should be able to find the problem then
Boost-n-Juice
I did put a lug nut on there. The play is 100% coming from the Rack. Any ideas? Rack bad?
ridenred27
inner tie rod ends, but rack could be bad also. remove the rack boot and check the inner tie rod end if you dont see any movement then check the rack to steering colium joints
