My sis has an 89 civic. bought it about two months ago. she went to start it once and it was dead..put a new battery in, it was fine, took it for a drive and the engine started smoking. Brought it home and now it's dead again.

i'm debating trading her the festiva for it, if i can figure out what the hell is wrong. it's not the alternator and i'm about to go see if the battery is shot. i tried to jump it and nothing, i'll have to check the relays and stuff but yeah, any suggestions.

The main relay is a part that commonly goes out on those, especially when it starts to get warm outside and after the car has been sitting in the sun. The main relay is under the dash to the left of the gauge cluster. If you hit that side of the dash it will probably start up if the relay is sticking.

Let me ask you this, do the dash lights come on when you turn the ignition?

the battery was DEAD> i charged it and the lights work, and the door buzzer works, but nothing else, doesnt even start to turn over.

how do i get to the main relay? my sister is giving me this car so i want to get it running and ready to go.

the 70amp that went to the battery was blown so i replaced it as well, now the lights go up, but that's it.

okay here's the prob now

battery was completely dead...charged it and replaced the 70amp that goes to the battery. now the lights come up and work, hazards work, and the dinger works. nothing else works at all. the key will turn and that's about it.

this car is being given to me and well dammit i want to be sure i can fix it cheaply smile.gif

any clues.

nothing works but headlights and hazards.

Here is the main relay, but shown for RHD. Yours will be in the same spot on the LEFT side. When you get to it, try tapping it to see if that will unstick it.
