friday the thirteenth, poker

Orion

Recommended Posts

my friend and i are hosting a poker game this friday evening south of delaware off of route 23.

the game will be a .25/.50 no limit hold'em cash game, with the possibility of other games dependant on demand.

initial buy in will be around 30 dollars.

we will shuffle up and deal at 7pm.

there are, besides the standard rules, a few items of note.

1. there will be no cash outs prior to midnight. do not trip. its a cash game, so you dont have to be there at 7 to play. show up whenever, its all good. as an aside, if you bust out prior to midnight, you are not obligated to buy back in.

2. after midnight, you must give 20 minutes warning before cashing out. if youre the kind of guy who wins a huge pot, and then stands up and cashes out, you will not like this game. stay home.

thats it. we usually have about 12-15 players at these games, and its not unusual for there to be about four to five hundred dollars on the table at any one time. we try to limit it to 8 players per table so it doesnt get too crowded.

feel free to pm me with questions or to get directions and rsvp.

hope to hear from you!

Yeah, we had a good time. Jess won some pretty big pots, none bigger than the one where she caught a boat holding a 2-6 offsuit.

I think we did fairly well, considering that we only bought in for $25 each. So, essentially, we turned $50 into $122, and we only played for about three hours. That's about $25 an hour and commensurate with Matt Damon-in-Rounders philosophy that the goal should be to win one big pot every hour.

I would have to prefered to play with people I knew, but, we got there late, so it was understandable.

Looking forward to the next one. :)

trying to get a little feedback, help me out.

how was it?

did you enjoy yourself?

were there any issues at your table?

were you comfortable with the game?

would you recommend any changes?

thanks in advance. preacher and i would like thank you for attending, and also ask that you help us to improve. our goal is to eventually be considered one of the most solid cash games in central ohio. long way to go, but, hey, baby steps, right?

DJ, overall, I think the game went fine, and I have no complaints. However, since you asked for feedback, I thought I would give you some:

Those table tops that were used, while functionally fine (e.g. the cards slid over them without problems), were annoying - the Aces thing in the middle kept fucking with people the whole game. If you have different table tops, ones that are the same texture but lack the Aces logo, then use them.

When we got there, you had to open another table. To do so, you had to use that one guy's table top. You asked him to use it, and he seemed a little annoyed by that. Then, in the same fit of annoyance, he says, "If anyone spills beer on it, then you have to buy it." Okay, that's understandable, I guess, but, if you're trying to establish yourselves as a premier cash game in the Columbus area, then you can't have guys bitching like that at people who just walk in the door. I was kind of peeved at the guy for saying that, and the other guys were as well - it was something everyone made a point of commenting about a few times (e.g., "Hey, watch it, don't spill your beer or you'll be forced to buy this table top!"). In all honesty, I had the impulse to walk over, pour my beer on it, hand the guy a $20, and then set it on fire right there, just in spite. But that's just me. Anyways, I guess what I'm saying is this: if you want to run a top-notch cash game, then the people involved have to act more professionally than that. Having that guy say those kinds of things and act like that put all of us on edge immediately upon walking in the door. And, what's probably worse, is that him making threats about drinking would seemingly discourage people from drinking, which is idiotic, given that it's to everyone's advantage (except the drinker) to have someone drinking, as drinking equates to loose play, bigger pots, and more money to be taken. My impression is that it's an assumed risk that shit may get spilled if you allow beverages into a place. I look at it this way: would the manager at the poker room at the Bellagio say, "Okay, we've got a spot open for you at that table - hey, I see you've got a beer; you spill it, and you have to pay to replace the table top," or anything like that? No. So, if it were me, I'd get all my guys in line, and tell them, "Look, we may use your shit. If we do, then don't bitch about it, even if something gets spilled on it. If you're that concerned about the integrity of your materials, then I'd suggest you don't offer that we can use them."

It was great that there were three tables going. It kind of sucked that I didn't have the opportunity to play with more folks. On one hand, that's just kind of the way it goes, and it's not an entirely a bad thing. Also, it's unfeasible (and a little silly) to think of making everyone shuffle their positions every so often just to mix up the players. However, you may want to consider for the future coordinating things so that the people that have the most cash in front of them are all playing at the same table. It would be kind of like a forced move format - you move people from table to table depending on their chip stack. This may, you don't have one guy with a monster stack remaining at a table and pushing around a bunch of other guys that are just buying in for $10 a pop. Like I said, not doing this isn't tragic or anything, but, by implementing it, you could enhance the heterogeneity and homogeneity of the tables at the same time - switching up the players at the table periodically (hetereogeneity) while maintaining that the chip stacks at the table remain about the same (homogeneity). All this can get kind of technical, and I'm not sure how technical you wanted to make it. However, if you're looking to mimic the cash games run at casinos, and if the game gets bigger, then you'll want to consider these types of things.

Get some music in there. Christ, it was quiet. Not that it has to be concert-like in there, but at least have something in the background.

We can discuss issues related to rakes over the phone.

Okay, there you go. I think I may have went a bit overboard, but, then again, you invited it. :)

sweet. thanks doc.

about scott,

that guy can be a real douchebag sometimes. at the end of the night, we ended up having one table left, and it was at "his" table. he said something else about the table top, and preacher and i smacked him down. we let him know that if we had to use anything that was his (chips, table top, cards) then he can go ahead and assume that it is "insured by the house" and that threatening the players will get him uninvited in the future.

i dug the table tops, because they were so easy to use. we all hated the aces too. preacher and i are trying to figure out how to scrape those off.

preacher and i are going to be investing in some actual clay chips, and building some "real" poker tables to use.

doc, next time you have some free time, give me a call. well do lunch.
