Stock internals 4.6 2v

Can anyone give me an estimate on how much hp the stock internals on a 4.6 2v motor can handle? I'm currently working on a buildup project aiming at 400 whp n/a, and trying to decide if i need to upgrade the internals...any help would be appreciated.

CAI, 75 tb, plenum, undecided on intake, undecided on cam, 90 MAF, 24 lb injectors, undecided on heads, u/d pulleys, msg dist, radiator, fan, shorty headers, o/r x pipe, exhaust, tune. 400 whp IS probably a pipe dream, but we'll see where this takes me. Any suggestions or recommendations would be helpful.

What year 4.6L are we talking. Is if from a truck, crown vic, or mustang?

 

A 4.6L can take the power levels you are talking about. Just keep the revs to 6000rpm; 6500rpm for the Mustang motor and you should be fine.

 

My reccomendation is to go with stock PI heads. Port them and if you have the $$$$ get a set of nice cams. You'll have a nice ~350hp quick revving v8.

98 mustang 4.6. unfortunately, no PI heads. the stock heads make great low end torque, but the hp's pretty limited. should i swap out for 99+ heads? or port and polish existing ones? or maybe aftermarket?

why spend money to port and polish turds? get pi's at least

becasue ported npi's are making the same amount of power as PI heads.

 

As stated already with those mods you will not make 300 rwhp.

yes greg but why not start with a better head then have them worked. Granted I am not a pro at 4.6 becouse my car is a 5.0 so that is what I read up on. But starting with the best you are able to buy then moveing forward just seems to make more sence.

 

Once ported they are the same head. Why spend the extra money on the core when you achieve the same result in the end?

No, it's definitely a different casting, and also the PI heads will increase compression if bolted on to a stock long block. You can open the non PI versions up to mate up to a PI intake. I think there's more material in the non PI head.

So eli is a ported to the max pi and a ported to the max non going to flow the same then?

They will flow close enough to call it the same. One of the advantages of the PI head is raised CR through a smaller cc combustion chamber. You will also want the later style intake and the PI cams. So there are some other things that add power besides just the heads.

 

So you can work either set of heads, it all boils down to budget in my opinion.
