RedRocket1647545505
I've got a Sony laptop. It's worked pretty good for the last two years that I've had it. Recently though, it's been doing something that's been driving me nuts. It will lock up for 2-3 seconds, and then work normal. It does this about every 10 seconds. It's driving me crazy. The mouse stops moving, videos stop playing, the clock even stops, for those 2-3 seconds. Then it will work fine for the next 10 or so, then start all over. It seems like it does it when it's warm (the computer), mostly. I've tried everything my computer illiterate ass can think of. I deleted all of my porn (there was a lot). I deleted all the stuff I didn't need. I even ran Sony's laptop recovery, which claims to wipe off the entire harddrive and restore it to factory settings. This didn't work. The harddrive (I think) also started to make a funny noise during the restoring process as well. I'm not sure what that is all about. Any suggestions before I punch thing? Guest Mushijobah
ctl.alt.del....processes....sort by mem-usage...see if any of the high users are things you do not use, look odd (poss. virus). If you find something, clean comp. with virus scan (fully updated). If it doesnt work, goto Start...Run...type 'msconfig'. Select the startup tab and try to locate the files on that. Deselect it as a startup item....apply. Should work. Also might wanna try to defragment hard-drive.

I would do that and also look at the performance tab and see if you are using almost all of your memory and see if the cpu usage spikes when it freezes. I recently went from 1.5 gb of ram to 1 and when I close a game it lags for like 30 seconds.

Mensan
Mine did the same when the power supply fan failed (desktop). Seems like heat is the main culprit. My clock was off by like 3 hours one day; that's when I noticed it.
RedRocket1647545505
Mine did the same when the power supply fan failed (desktop). Seems like heat is the main culprit. My clock was off by like 3 hours one day; that's when I noticed it. Exact same thing mine is doing. The clock is always off.I left it on overnight, and when I woke up this morning, it was locked up, and scalding hot. Hottest I've ever felt it get. I usually run one of those plate fan thingies underneath of it to try and pull heat away from it, which seems to help it, but not lately. If it turn it off for a little bit and allow it to cool down, it will work fine for about 15 min, til it heats up again, then it starts flaking out. Rally Pat
Yeah, overheating sounds like your problem. You may want to consider taking the laptop apart, and cleaning it as well as putting some thermal paste on the CPU. It may or may not help you, but it is worth a shot. Skinner
most laptops have a small fan in them to pull heat out you should be able to hear it at boot. If I had to guess fan is bad. should be a easy fix if you can find a replacement fan.
thorne
if your affraid to take it apart (Vios are sometimes small as crap) just take it and blow canned air NOT UPSIDE DOWN threw the phone ports sometimes this will freeup said crud and make it work again. I would plan to buya new on in the next year. Do you smoke alot of times msokers have this problem first. I know my 5 year old laptop died really fast when i let my buddy have it who smoked. Buck531
Yep.. take a can of canned air and blow out the fan/heatsync. If it still doesn't do it, you might need to get a new cpu fan. We have to replace a ton of those here at work.
BloodRed
I would check your fan to make sure it is working. And the canned air is a good idea, just make sure you use it around your keyboard. Most laptops pull the air through the keys on the keyboard to cool stuff down.
