dustinsn3485
http://www.news.com.au/travel/story/0,26058,24615712-5014090,00.htmlA PYTHON has been filmed trying and failing to swallow whole what looks like a wallaby. In the video, posted on break.com, people at James Cook University can be heard squealing as the python clamps its jaws around the creature and begins to swallow. But the snake seems to realise it is biting off more than it can chew and is forced to back away and regurgitate the upper half of the animal's body. The camera operator then jolts and swears as the python pulls away briefly from the animal to inspect the crowd that has gathered. Andrew Krockenberger, associate professor at James Cook University, said he ran out to watch the attack with some students after being alerted by a co-worker. "Our lab co-ordinator came in from the car park and told us there was a python trying to eat a wallaby – so we all went out to have a look," he said. "While seeing sakes and wallabies isn't unusual, it was very unusual to see a snake trying to eat a wallaby on the side of a road." Prof Krockenberger said the python made several attempts to consume the wallaby before the incident was caught on camera. "It was a very small python and it gave up after a while. It had a good try but it was a little over ambitious," he said. "I don't know whether it would have managed to swallow the wallaby if there hadn't had been so many people watching. I think it got a little spooked. "We moved the wallaby from the side of the road to a nearby bush hoping the snake would have another go later, but it didn't." While some believed the wallaby had been hit by a car, Prof Krockenberger said the evidence suggested the snake attacked and killed the wallaby. "I suspect the snake killed the wallaby because it was right at the end of a low speed road, and the wallaby wasn't there in the morning," he said. "I spoke to someone who had just driven their car in and they said the wallaby wasn't there then." Cairns is proving to be a battleground for some of the world's deadliest animals, with locals witnessed other fascinating battle.
dustinsn3485
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,,24540399-5009760,00.htmlTHIS amazing image of a mammoth spider devouring a bird was taken in the backyard of a property near Cairns. The image, which is being cirulated via email worldwide, is real, according to wildlife experts, The Cairns Post reported. The photo, believed to have been taken earlier this week, shows the spider clenching its legs around a lifeless bird trapped in a web at a property near Atherton, west of Cairns. Joel Shakespeare, the head spider keeper at NSW's Australian Reptile Park, has told ninemsn the spider was a golden orb weaver. "Normally they prey on large insects, it's unusual to see one eating a bird," he said. Mr Shakepeare said he had seen Golden Orb Weaver spiders as big as a human hand but the northern species in tropical areas were known to grow larger. dustinsn3485
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,,24593107-2,00.htmlIT's a jungle out there - at least in the backyards of Cairns.First it was a giant spider eating a bird, now a python has been snapped making a meal of a sulphur-crested cockatoo. Artist and Clifton Beach resident Cindy Lane was painting in her studio when she heard a "couple of loud squawks" coming from the bougainvillea tree in her backyard. She found the python coiling itself tightly around the bird high in the tree’s branches. "I considered jumping in to save him, but his last breath was literally being squeezed from him as we approached," she told The Cairns Post. She said the python took about two hours to complete his meal after "one false start". "It was difficult to watch but at the same time mesmerising."
