Seven hurt as drag racing car hits crowd

6/2/2007, 11:46 p.m. EDT

The Associated Press

CARROLLTON, Ohio (AP) — A car demonstrating drag racing at an annual festival careened out of control and fishtailed into the crowd, injuring seven including an 11-year-old boy, a sheriff's deputy said Saturday.

The crash occurred at the annual rib burn-off at Carrollton Airport on Saturday, Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy Ron Clapper said. He did not know how the accident happened.

Six people were examined at area hospitals and released, Clapper said. The 11-year-old was flown by helicopter where he was being treated for a pelvis injury and cuts, he said. The boy's injuries were not serious, Clapper said.

Anyone know more about this?

I've been to that town, it's about 45 mins north of New Philadelphia. Sucks to hear that as it's a really small town and most people probably know each other.

Someone from the Cleveland crew or Massillon area on here might know more as it's not too far from them.

North-east, close enough. The only thing I remember they had up there for jobs was the Napa warehouse and even then it's not a big place, and that town is in the middle of nowhere.

I was watching 10tv this morning and they had video from the racing accident. Of course they cut the video just as the car starts to go into the crowd. The track looked like it was just a airport run way. There were no concret barriors or anything The people were just standing and sitting on the grass along side the track.

So was this an organized event? Or street racing?

At some point you have to think that it is not a good idea to stand next to a street were people are drag racing. When I lived on the east side I would not go near the street when the guys were doing burn outs on Brice road.

Err from your first post it sounded like the car was by itself going down the run way in a demonstration of a drag race pass.

It also sounded like an organized event, quoted from your first post "annual rib burn-off at Carrollton Airport".

Like Eric said, I think it was an organized event. And yes I do believe the car was drag racing someone else. In the video there was another car lined up right next to it. I don't think you can be for sure the other left the line as well because the camera was on the car that went off the road.

Damn that sucks. There are no drag strips up there so it was probably just on the county airport runway. I too wonder what exactly was going on.

I grew up about 20 mins from there. Drive through every so often. Yup, there ain't shit in that area to do at night (correction: any time of day) other than go to a bar.

However, State Routes 39 (near atwood lake) & 9 are fun roads to drive when there is no traffic. I once made it from New Philly all the way across Carrol Co in a half hour.......normally a 50 min drive.
