caseyctsv
I have an 02 Suburban with the 5.3 Liter motor. When it is cold the truck runs rough and throws a p0171 and P0174 (lean condition in both banks). It is also throwing a P0300 (random misfire) code. I just had it to the dealership to have a cat replaced. They replaced it under warranty but then went on to say the intake gaskets were leaking and wanted to charge me 500 to replace them. I have had my T/A's LS1 apart a few times so if that is what it trukly is I could do that myself. I am suspicious though that this problem was not there before and suddenly "appears" after warranty work. Could the dealership do anything that would throw this code? From what I understand this could be caused by an intake leak, an exhaust leak, or a bad fuel filter. Is there anything easy to check or do I just need to get it to somebody to look at? Unfortunately I don't have a mechanic I trust right now. Come on Rutan!
Guest Hal
You should be able to see if the intake is leaking. Check the radiator cap for sludge. If you can't find anything, I can pressure test it for you if you want.
SinisterSS
no the dealer can't make codes appear out of thin air, Try cleaning your Mass Air Flow sensor, a dirty MAF sensor can cause O2 codes
AJ
chances are it is your intake. a clogged fuel filter could cause this as well. take the filter off and try to blow through it. if its hard to blow throught then you can stop there and just replace that. if thats not the problem replace your intake gaskets with GM part number 89017589. they are a teal gasket insted of the orange ones that are on the truck now. GM has some problems with the material the orange ones were made out of reacting with the fuel and the teal ones are different so it doesn't happen again. caseyctsv
I didn't mean that they did it on purpose. I thought maybe when they installed the new cat it was not installed properly and is leaking. On this motor the intake is dry so if it was leaking I don't think there would be evidence of it - that is why I cannot see how they indicated it was leaking. They could not tell me how they knew that was the problem eother - just going by the code it threw.

caseyctsv
there is a bulletin for the issue. i have done alot of them at work. Thanks man. Now I just have to decide whether to do it myself or not. It was not too bad on my car seeing as I threw out all of the pollution control items - might be a little more difficult with this one. However, there sure will be a lot more room to work!

Guest Hal
they are dry intakes. Didn't know the Suburbans were a dry. That would make it more difficult to check with a pressure tester
AJ
its easier than your car was. its takes maybe 20 mins to get it all done. hal, yeah a little bit. just remember all LSx type engines are dry. 4.8, 5.3, 5.7 and the 6.0.
