Is that a Honda Motor?

Yes it is, F4i with the blocked bored to 609cc (comp limits engines to 610cc), custom pistons raise CR to a little over 15:1, custom ground cam shafts, and custom dry sump compose of the internal changes to the motor.

Nice! But that's a tiny wheelbase, both length and width. What series is this for?

Series is Formula SAE in the states and Formula Student in Europe. The smaller wheelbase is used due to the tighter tracks that we compete on.

Other interesting info:

0-60mph in less than 3.5 sec.

0-118mph (top speed) in approx. an 1/8 of a mile

1.8g lateral acceleration

2.0g braking

Our 2007 car (see avatar) finished 4th in world competition in the FSAE East (world event, and series largest) and was the 2nd US team. We also finished 4th at Formula Student on the famous Silverstone track in the U.K. and was the top finishing US team.

I may go to Detroit, but can't say for certain. We are registered for Virginia, Michigan, and California... and will have the No. 04 for East and West thanks to our top finishes last year ;)

How about you? Also, hows the car coming? you guys make the March 1 date?

Oh yea, we made March 1st date. Things are coming along fairly well, with some really "out there" ideas we're trying this year - should produce for us though. My schedule this quarter has my time in the shop pretty limited, but I'm fairly certain I'm gonna try to go to Michigan at least.

Oh yea, intakes new this year, a lot of time spent there actually. Other than that, we have some super secrets. New engine direction should be happening next year - as funding allows. We got a few sponsorship deals this year that should make that cost a little easier to swallow too.

I hope you don't mind me adding these pics, but these are pictures of OSU's car from last year ( or at least some version of it we put together to test for the weekend ). It seems very few people are familiar with the cars themselves, so I guess this will just be another example.

P.S. - David, from looking at your pics, you guys' shop is waay better lit than ours. I'm gonna suggest we throw in a few fluorescents. That would be super nice.

Is that a glorified gokart? Sorry, I'm ignorant about this...

-Marc

Well, yes, in size, but in performance, no sir. I know about ours, not everything about cincy's but they're similar.

OSU's car uses a 600cc F4i Honda engine, and has to draw all it's air in through a 20mm restrictor. We make around 100hp with that motor, and it weighs less than 400lbs. Suspension design is basically as it would be in an F1 car, with mostly titanium compenents, all fully adjustable. 0-60 is between 3 and 4 seconds generally, although our car could be on the low end of that scale this year. It's basically just really fast, and horizontal G's are enough to put deep bruises in my thighs after a few minutes of driving....

Anyway, it's a little more than a "glorified go-kart".

Check this out, not so much racing, but putting old worn tires out of their misery.....

I'm sure Juiced has some similar info about cincy's car - I know they finished WAAAY ahead of us last year!

I'm new to the cincy area and I'm considering becoming a bearcat (going back to school). How do I get in on that, ME?

No, you dont have to be an ME to get involved, we allow anyone from the university to participate. Building this car covers every aspect of a business, there is a whole business side that includes costing, quoting, obtaining sponsors, marketing, then the engineering side that includes research, design, prototyping, manufacturing, etc. Pretty much anything you can think of there is a roll to play.

If you want to get involved, shoot me a PM and we can meet up and I can take you on tour, introduce you to the team, etc.

Oh, as far as performance of the UC car... here were the 2007 numbers

0-60mph in 3.5 sec

0-118mph (top speed) in aprox. an 1/8 of a mile

1.8g's lateral acceleration

over 2g's braking

We use an F4i as well (this is probably the last year) we have a couple F4i's that have been bored to 609cc (comp limits to 610cc) and CR raised to over 15:1, custom ground camshafts, and custom dry sump complete the internal modifications.

2007 Results

-FSAE East (largest event, which featured 140 teams from 16 different countries) we finished 4th overall and was the 2nd US team.

-Formula Student (Held at famous Silverstone in the UK) we finished 4th again and was the top US team.
