copperhead
http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSTRE49863N20081009?feedType=RSS&feedName=businessNews&rpc=23&sp=true DETROIT (Reuters) - The global auto market may experience an "outright collapse" in 2009 amid growing concerns around credit availability of credit and general economic stress, an influential industry tracking firm said on Thursday. J.D. Power and Associates forecast U.S. light vehicle sales would fall to 13.2 million units in 2009 after likely settling at 13.6 million units this year, adding that a pronounced recovery is more than 18 months away. "While the global automotive industry is clearly experiencing a slowdown in 2008, the global market in 2009 may experience an outright collapse," said Jeff Schuster, executive director of automotive forecasting for J.D. Power. "While mature markets are being impacted more severely than emerging markets, no country or region is completely immune to the turmoil," Schuster said. I'm not sure that losing a major automaker would be such a bad thing. The market is diluted with so much crap right now, from so many companies, that no one thing is selling well. Then you add in all of the stupid redundancy from the American automakers, and you realize that none of it makes any sense. Yes, it would mean jobs lost all over the country, but in return it would strengthen the remaining automakers, maybe even to the point where our .gov doesn't have to bail them out as much, using our tax money. unfunnyryan
Losing a major company wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Think of it this way. If we only had 3 major car manufacturers, they would all be bringing in MUCH more money because the market wouldn't be as diluted. This money could go to researching safer, more efficient, and better performing cars.

If by "safer" you mean Ford Pinto, "more efficient" you mean Hummer H3, and "better performing" you mean "Zastava Koral", then yes, I'm all for it as well
