Lean was mean

This happened last august. I had just got the car back after being away for 6 months getting a cage, custom cams, return style fuel system and a methanol injection kit. I'm just now getting the engine back together after finding out what the damage was.

This is what it sounded like after the 13th pass. The meth injection line blew a hole and cause it to go lean. This was a built engine. It made 656rwhp through a C4 transmission.

After replacing the rod bearings with the engine still in the car and the lash adjusters it made the same noise. I pulled the engine to figure out what happened.

The marks on the pistons are from a borescope I used.

This is where the noise was coming from.

This was the line that blew. I did a search on it and found out that it was not the hose supplied with my kit. It was only rated to 116psi and 140*. The hose that came with the kit was rated 450* and the burst pressure was 600psi.

What I did today.

IPS welded my headers and turbo tubes together. They are also welding a flange on my cold pipe for a 50mm tial bov.

I also bought stainless steel meth injection line and relocated the IAT sensor.

i know i am going to catch flak for this... i love the 4.6. dont know why, but i do. love seeing them built(or rebuilt). the 5.0 never really did it for me. although, i know... it can make some mean power and is a strong motor. i just love the 4.6. anyways...

what compression ratio are you running with those turbos? you still running the OEM intake? what times it running? if you dont want to give out any of the above mentioned details thats cool. i understand. i didnt think the stangs came with the alum block. is that a explorer transplant? or, am i wrong about stangs and alum blocks? (EDIT: never mind i haven't slept,

This was a built engine.
lack of sleep is worse then being drunk. i fail.)

It's around 9:1.

I using a ported HPS intake.

It was running mid 10's.

96-99 and 01-02 cobras and the Mach 1's came with an aluminum block. My block and steel crank came from a 96 cobra.

I was hoping to be able to drive the car a little this weekend, but I'm waiting on that cold pipe that IPS is welding the bov flange on. I was able to make sure the car would start and run. I must have hooked everything up right as it fired right up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here I was checking the a/f. It seems to be too lean up top.

Here I was checking my brakes out.

Here I was checking to make sure the line lock was working right.

Here I was checking to make sure the tranmission was shifting right.
