94 Escort Headgasket/wife training

Recommended Posts

So, I started the project this morning of replacing headgasket while teaching the wife some new things. Going smooth so far.

The coolant is drained, fan removed, intake is off, downpipe disconnected, skid plates and battery taken out, alt belt removed and disconnected EGR tube. All I did was take out one downpipe bolt and the battery, and point my finger. Sunday's lesson will be on timing, removing belt, removing alternator and mount and then cylinder head.

Here's some pics of project:

lol, yeah i know. We can only work on it for about 2-3 hours at a time bc its so Fing hot down here. I figure 2 days off, 2 days back on. Bc I dont have to explain as much while she's putting it back together

it it will be more of "where did this go?" :grin2:

Eh, luckily its probably the easiest head gasket ever. Right side is cake, thats what we did. Left side when we pull the nator and timing belt today are whats going to suck. At least its not like a quad 4 and timing cover has 20 tiny bolts and nuts.

We really probably only got a good solid hour of work done yesterday between setting garage up and me explaining the parts she's taking off. Got blessed with another cloudy day today so its cool enough to work in a garage. We should have the head off today though so I can go to the beach tomorrow. w00t

that would be on my list of some of the easy ones for sure.

i dont mind the quad 4's tho. not many techs wanted to work on them. so i got to work on alot of them :D. worst ones i have done are the 3.8 dohc sedona's and amanti.no belts like the 3.0/3.5 motors. all chains.

that's an old pic...but hilarious. Update, pics soon to come. Got the nator off in about 20 minutes without breaking anything, tensioner, timing cover was a beyotch but came out, and is set to TDC. Called it quits since my dumbass forgot to pick up the fuel line tool at parts store...Head is coming off tomorrow...after the beach! hahaha pics tomorrow too, i should be redder and so should my ginger wife.

for what your going to have in gaskets and shit you probably coulda just changed the whole engine

leave the intake and exhuast manifolds on that head when you pull it off it'll save time

Eh, gaskets not very expensive, haven't priced everything out. Used junkyard engine(that might need headgasket)is a couple hundred. This gives me an excuse to buy more tools and teach her more. Plus the bottom end should be solid...might burn a little oil when im done but that's fine. I've gotten about 40k miles out of this car in 4 years and I bought it for $1000 and have maybe another $1500 in parts over that time. Seems fair to me, 4 years of transportation for $2500 and it gets over 30mpg. Smarter then a "smart" car financially.

Forgot to take pics before I took manifolds off. Got it off on day 3 with about 3-4 hours total work time involved. Just too freakin hot down here to work any longer then maybe an hour a day. Here are some pics of the damage...

I broke only one, excuse to buy a torch :D

No head for me...:(

Only other issues I had were 1 broken thermostat housing bolt, and 1 that felt like it wanted to break. So 2 new bolts from ACE hardware will fix that. A stripped downpipe stud, going to try to clean the threads up...but i dunno if it can be saved. And the bolt I snapped...going to have to try and score 2 of those(one was missing?)
