The edges of the gears appear sharper than those of an exacto-knife under the same magnification: http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/8844/dscf3112.jpg Bimetal Balannce wheel rim. Because the spring-rates vary with temerature, the balance wheel is made of a steel-brass sandwich, which causes it to shrink or expand with tempurature, countering the change in spring rate.
