Got stopped last night for an "unsafe lane change"

I was doing about 75 and saw there was a cop camping in the grass, so I tapped the brakes to get to 65, signaled, and got over.

Turns out there was another cop right behind me.

He gave me a warning for the speed, but cited me for the lane change.

My first ticket.

2 points.

I'm supposed to get a court date sometime soon. Do I have a case here? I need to get the points off, because I just got a job with Lexus, and dont know if they've run my license yet.

My lawyer said it'd be about $300 in lawyer fees, but he thinks he could get the points dropped.

Is there any way that I could show up and get it done myself? I don't need this ticket costing me over $500... but i cant afford to have the points.

Show up and see what happens. You really have to know what they want to do with you before you can figure out how to fight it. You might need the laywer and you might not. You just won't know until the prosecutor starts talking to you.

So the first court date doesn't determine anything if i just plead not guilty?

I was doing some reading, and people were saying to write a letter to the District attorney asking for the case to be dismissed. Would this do anything you think?

You can *usually* get it taken care of on the first shot, at least in franklin county. How you plead is up to to you, I usually go the no contest route, and ask to speak to the prosecutor to get it wrapped up quickly. (they have enough on their hands besides your 2 point ticket).

Usually explain that your job depends on your record, and you are always careful, and your record speaks for itself. Admit wrong doing, and tell them you are willing to pay whatever, but would ask for a non-moving equipment violation.

Just ask about my $250 improper wiper ticket.

Truthfully, if you don't have any real record, (IE: you are not some habitual speeder) they could care less about punishment, but WANT YOUR MONEY. If you offer them a situation which allows them to stampt a piece of paper and you give them $$ without taking up an hour or two of their time later, they will usually bite.
