TURBOED Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 So I've known since I bought my house that I have a driveway drainage problem. Turns out that flash summer storms flood it so bad that my garage takes on a fair amount of water... not good. So I guess that I would have two options. 1) Tear up driveway, regrade, re-pave. My driveway is really big, and this would be $$$ 2) Have a drain installed just outside of the garage door that runs the length of the garage. Obviously option #2 is what I am leaning towards due to I would assume a lower cost. Anyone know anything about doing this? Who would I call to get estimates? The low spot is basically in the middle of the "T", but a little towards the garage. So it doesn't take much to get water to pool up against the garage door. Tractor Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 Well if your lot slopes down around the back of your garage you could take up like 12" of blacktop across the front of your garage and put in a storm drain (concrete and steel) then just pipe it to the back yard. You could use the big black slinky pipe (can't think of name) then just let it pop out of the ground where ever it finally meets the grades elevation. Or you could dump it into a gravel bed underground. I piped all my roof drains around to the back of my house. several run under my driveway. I'm thinking a gravel basin might be my only option. Dumb question, but what do I use to cut back blacktop? How was it with tonight's storm? Heh, why do you think I started this thread tonight? I opened the garage about 10 minutes into the storm to give my gf a garage spot, and it was like the levee's broke, and my garage was New Orleans. 88lxvert Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 black top is easy to cut most companies use and axe to cut the line and a sledge hamer to break into big chunks and lift it out of the way a spud bar helps to pry it up wont be horribly dificult to make the drain by the garage but the french drain in which the rock basin in the ground is called will be a biutch based on the amount of water you are talking about will need lots of room to go so that means a big ass hole filled with big ass rock and gravel we did one at my last house and used a back hoe Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you surveyed it I wonder if you could drain it to the street and hook up to the storm system. At that point you'd for sure need permits, but they don't add to much to the cost of having it done right. Otherwise if its just rain that happens and leaves pretty quick after a storm you could do it like a septic system gravel bed. 12x12ft 2 ft below the surface then 2 more ft of small to medium river gravel. Richard Cranium Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 Probably not a good idea, but since we're brain storming .... put a sump/manhole at the low point of the driveway and use a sump pump to send it elsewhere?
