5.56 Purchase

Recommended Posts

I recently placed an order for 1000 rounds of 62 gr PMC 5.56 for what I thought was an ok deal. The cost was $.31 delivered from the armory online.

I will post a review upon receipt and test fire.

That x-tac is pretty decent ammo. The brass is halfway decent for reloading, and it's much much better condition-wise and quality-wise than the XM193 that I've picked up recently. One of the perks of buying new, not seconds ammo. The x-tac I have shoots right about 3 MOA with some ARs and just about 2 MOA in another.

What kind of horror stories with the British ammo?

I've never had a malfunction shooting with the British 5.56 ammo, in fact, it's pretty consistent shooting surplus, but check out what I discovered in one of the spent cases...

This is RORG 92 (Royal Ordinance Radway Green)

The hole in the piece of scrap brass is from my decapping pin.

Dayum! The horror stories were from Iraq. Some units down in southern Iraq with the Brits, supposedly were issued British made 5.56. Said there were a number of pop and no kick (failure to fire even when the pin struck the primer) It may have been a few cases of the stuff, but I heard a few say it didn't cycle well through M16/M4's. I've always felt pretty confident in seeing LC stamped on all my rounds. Even the M118LR :)

I've shot about 1500 rounds of the RORG ammo without any issues, but it does tend to be a little slower than the LC rounds I've had. I'd almost say the earlier (89') headstamped ammo is weaker. I've never found any junk in the brass though, and I've reloaded a good bit of it. Yikes! Go post that on arfcom so all the ninnies liquidate their stash.

Where do you purchase your Lake City and what does it typically run? Is it new or reloaded by Lake City?

I go to http://www.palmettostatearmory.com

They get it out quick, and at a decent price. It maybe reloaded, but I'm not 100%. It is deffinately dependable ammo to run in most AR's with a 1:7 twist. Not that you can't run it through a 1:9 twist barrel, but it was designed for the 1:7 twist barrel.

For instance, a 300 round bulk pack of M855 is about $110.

1:9 is enough twist to stabilize the 62 gr. length bullets. I think that the 1:9 will even stabilize the longer 62 gr. tracer bullets.

Edit:

After taking another look at the 62gr. tracers, I think it might take a 1:7 twist for a stable flight... has anyone shot these out of a 1:9?

Sorry for the blurry photo.

From left to right... 55 gr., 55 gr tracer, 62 gr (SS109), 62 gr. tracer.

Fin Fur and Feather in Ashland has Federal FMJ 55g 5.56 for $5.99/20 and Federal Tactical .223 FMJ 55g also for $5.99/20. Works out to $0.30. Got a bunch today. Didn't have much of the .223, but had cases of the 5.56 - but my guess is it'll be soon gone. All brass. May not be the best available but for target shooting, it's a deal.

I have shot PP M855 and obtained great results. I like the LC stuff as well, I usually go between the two depending on which one is cheaper. I always wondered about the X-tac, but since the cost difference wasn't significant, i didn't want to risk it.

I like to stay on the safe side with NATO ammo. Nothing wrong with a 1:9 twist, but I stick to my LMT w/ 1:7 twist for NATO rounds or the heavier 77 grain goodies. I've oy shot about 20 rounds of the MK262 stuff (I believe that's the nomenclature). Buddy hooked me up after he went to the All Army rifle shoot @ FT.Benning. With the 55 grain stuff, I never really noticed a difference in groups between my S&W or my LMT.
