SpaceGhost
Watch the video. Remember this is an Intel product, Apple just has the first machines with the technology. This is what they called "Light Peak" before it was released. http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/25/notes-of-interest-on-thunderbolt-and-macbook-pro/

kshymkiw83
10:25 a.m. (Dong Ngo) : There won't be TB PCIe cards it seems. You'll need a new computer. 10:34 a.m. (Dong Ngo) : There won't be add-in TB adapters, you'll need a new computer/motherboard that supports TB. Welcoeme to Firewire 2.
SpaceGhost
That's Apple's Mini Display Port Connector, the whole thing with this is you can connect anything with Thunderbolt in the future, 1 connection for Keyboards, monitors, Mice, storage, printers, whatever you use. Motherboards would have a few of these as connections nothing else and each one can be daisy chained up to 6 devices. Right now it is copper, in the future the optical ones will still work in the current MacBook Pros. Apple will get a slice of the pie because of their patent on the connector. Whatev's, faster is good. It's a DisplayPort cable + PCI-E cable rolled into one, so it's waaay more pins than a USB cable. Also, the port has the capability to do optical as well (frickin' laserbeams n shit). I don't think this is necessarily supposed to be a replacement for USB, which can accept multiple devices on a single port. These need to be daisy chained, and it's more for streaming video or single high speed devices.

unfunnyryan
backwards compatibility is what kept USB going strong. This has nothing towards its name, and will probably die like firewire. USB 3.0 still has more speed possible.
