Alaskan Cruise

My wife and I will be celebrating our 10 year anniversery in May of 2012 and we normally do a vacation to celebrate our anniversery. So we want to do something different for our 10 year, so we are thinking of taking an Alaskan cruise. Both of us have always wanted to visit Alaska, and figured a cruise would be the best. Looking to do a 7 day cruise, but haven't picked which route we want to do yet.

Anyone done an Alaskan Cruise? Any pointers/suggestions?

BTDT. Alaska is absolutely beautiful, I've been to most of the major cities at one time or another. FYI, I went on an Alaskan cruise on June, and the weather was very rough for one day. Everyone got seasick (except me) at one point, although there was never any danger. Many of the parts of the boat were closed (casino, pool, etc.) on my trip so check on that if it's important to you. Many of the guests are older, so expect to have much of the place to yourself late at night.

we did a family cruise in 2007 through princess cruise lines. We had so many people we were able to go all out.

Its the only cruise ship ive been on so i cant really compare it to anything. The boat it self had all the minimal amenities; casinos, expensive bars with watered down cocktails(so BYOY or more appropriatly sneakYOB), 12 more casinos, cheesy mixers and comedians, bingo, a black tie champagne event, and hot tubs filled with all sorts of "europen syle" swim wear...mostly worn by men.

It was a 10 day deal. 1/2 was spent on the boat/ports and 1/2 was spent on land which capped off a train ride from somewhere to the main resort in Denali natl park. We shoved off from Vancouver, hit Ketchakan, Glacier bay and Juneau...then went on land via bus and train to Fairbanks and then Denali.

It was amazing to see the sites, but since it was a faimly deal, including grandmas, it wouldnt be my 1st choice as how to see Alaska. that being said the boat allowed us access to things we never would have seen on land.

If you can swing it take an airplane ride around Denai.

CONS:

you cant suntan/play shuffel board on the deck when its cold and raning out

you'll get fat. 5 course meals every night( if you can even call that a con).

PRO: you get to:

-get up close and personal with glaciers of all sizes

-visit alaska brewing CO. They dont have facility big enough for a tour, so they just let you drink for free for an hour..or more.

I did a 7 day about 8 years ago the end of june. As the others said the weather will be cold and potentially rainy. The only thing I really would like to add was the excursions are very pricey compaired to the carribean cruises i have been on but trully awesome. Bottom line make sure you budget a lot of extra money for them.

^ that sold me. The giant ice chunk and glacier pic was the shit. Im going to share these with the gf and speed up the process ha

Its apperantly a natural process called...something or other. The ship was something ungodly tall like 16 stories high and the glaciers were towring above us as we sailed through. It sounds like a rifle crack when it goes off.

I am sure glad my wife does not come on this site. This is her dream vacation. I would rather do the carribean cruise myself. I am just having a hard time thinking all I would be doing is freezing my ass off and dreaming of a nice sandy beach listening to the ocean. Pictures are cool.
