Rocky31186
Having knowledge in diesels is a must. But If you have the basic knowledge and able to learn then don't let it deter you. You will also be fabricating a lot also.
Green Bastard
Are the pay rates just a starting rate (like if you do well then every few months you might get a raise until you top out)?
cstmg8
Same question about pay. Rocky, do they ever hire outside management? I'm interested in the building maintenance position, but right now I'm the service manager of a 17 story building and I don't really want to go backwards unless there's room for quick advancement. I'd love to get on at the airport though, I live 5 min away!

Turbs3000
Are the civil service tests involved with you guys?
cstmg8
I'd really like to apply for this one, but is there any chance to get in over $18? Do advancement opportunities arise often, or is it one of those places no one ever leaves?? Thanks Rocky!
Rocky31186
No Civil service test but full background and drug testing. They do promote within. We are Union and in middle of contract renewal.

ecc_33
Seems that the operator starting rate has went down since I left? I thought they came in around 19 a hour?
Rocky31186
In the union book it's been the same the past 3 years.. I don't think it's ever been in the 19's.. They got 1 application for the mechanic and 4 for the operators.
Rocky31186
Airport is now starting the Winter Seasonal hiring. Minimum of 20 hours a week but if it snows be prepared to work 12 hour shifts 7 days a week.. You dont HAVE to have experience running equipment as you will get trained on anything you drive. Twin CAT engine runway brooms, 22' Plows, snow blowers, if you have your CDL you could run the salt trucks on the roads, or you could shovel sidewalks.. We get a lot of landscapers that are looking for winter work and retired people. For the most part, you'll be waiting on snow, picking up trash or playing cards.. Must pass a background check to be on the airfield, but dont have to have CDL license. https://columbusairports.tms.hrdepartment.com/jobs/262/Winter-Seasonal-Port-Columbus-International-AirportPort-Columbus-International-Airport
