You're absolutely right. My uncle's brother in law was shot to death by an officer in Louisiana earlier this year. He was having a manic episode during withdrawal from alcoholism and police were called to try to calm him down. He was holding a kitchen knife (like a butter knife, not a chef's knife) and refused orders to drop it. Instead of trying to taser him, or baton him, or gas him, the officer elected to shoot him with a shotgun despite all his neighbors and his wife watching and screaming to the officer "DON'T SHOOT".

My girlfriend's first roommate was killed by officers in his house in March. While he claimed to family members to have a gun, he was not known to be in possession of one and no firearm was found on his body. He was shot 16 or so times by 4 officers. No taser was used. There has been mass censorship in the local media about it.

Both instances were white-on-white.

Both instances the person was using a deadly weapon. Officers are trained to match the level of force being used against them.

They're also trained to react with the least amount of force necessary.

Just playing devil's advocate here since I wasn't there. ;)

They are trained as to the maximum allowable force given a set of circumstances, but yes, they are primarily trained to de-escalate and avoid extreme circumstances as much as possible.

Has anyone thought to ask this; how well-trained is an officer that allegedly allows a suspect so close to him that he loses control of his sidearm?

You'd be surprised the amount of space you'd need to react properly. The "reactionary gap" they train you on in the police academy is 21 feet. Obviously thats not possible as every encounter is different.

Different circumstances require you to be closer or farther away from the person you're interacting with. Impossible to say though without seeing video of this actual encounter.

I had no idea Columbusracing.com had so many law enforcement experts, attorneys, civil rights gurus, and long distance crime scene reconstruction specialists.

How about this, we wait until there are some actual facts produced before this is all figured out? I mean, its almost like we have a grainy cell phone video of some dumbass getting hit by a sprint car on a dark track....

Oh and for the record based on the facts I've seen something really does not seem right. There are some parts of this story missing on both parts, but I really would like to know why a cop felt the need to shoot an unarmed person in the middle of the street.

And for those who just love to play "devils advocate"; what if you totally take race out of this? What if this is a black cop shooting an unarmed white kid in the middle of the street that just got done committing a robbery?

Keep buying what the media is selling, they need those ratings and the political officials need your blind vote

Sir yes sir. Sorry for providing my professional opinion on something that's brought national attention.

Then we would be picking out someone new wheels or congratulating someone on a new car purchase.

For the record, race is irrelevant to me. I would still be concerned and not jump to conclusions. However, I believe this holds me in the, dare I say it, "minority". Duh, duh, duhhhhhhhh. Or is that - bum bum bummmmm. Hell, I don't know. Screw it, just throw in a rimshot there.

Well the autopsy results are in, he was not shot in the back as claimed by the person with him, along with the other wittnesses. Soooo that kind of starts to toss some doubt into a lot of things here.

Like I said, there are a lot of things that just don't add up at all. I have not heard if there is a dash cam video, that would really tell the tale.

I'm very troubled by all of this riot action going on, what does that help?

I'd read there was one wound in his arm that could have been shot from behind, or conceivably from the front if his hands were over his head.

I still don't believe anything besides I don't think either the officer or the victim will get the justice they deserve. I don't know what either deserves, but they won't get it.

Witnesses frequently lie, especially if they have an agenda.

Hence my apprehension for any and all witness statements from either side of the issue.

We won't know the whole truth on this matter, one way or another.

Here's my issue:

Got more shit than I had in Iraq back in 03'. Not to mention, while on patrol, I didn't have my M16A4 pointed at anyone neither. I understand what they do, I get the necessity for SOME of the equipment. But their tactics and techniques are amateur at best.

And there's a major issue news stories and politicians aren't touching.
