S-13 Posted April 28, 2009 Report Share Posted April 28, 2009 While looking at the back of my bike one day, I noticed that my license plate was slightly split on one side. I think I'm going to try to get the DMV to give me a new one for free though being that I have only had it about a month and a half. If they don't I'm just going to weld it together haha. ReconRat Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 Yeah, I've seen plates crack from vibration. You've got a harmonic vibration. Try to dampen it out by using rubber washers to mount stuff, or adding weight somewhere that feels like it's vibrating less (half way between a length that is vibrating). You probably have to rev it up to road rpms to see and feel when and where the vibration is happening. For the plate to crack like that it would literally have to hum. Rubber washers or a gasket of rubber might fix it. Under the plate or the tail light bracket where it mounts on the fender, or the fender to the frame, etc. You might lose the ground for the lights, but a ground wire will fix that.I used to crack tail light bulbs constantly, on one bike. I cut a gasket for under the tail light bracket on the fender, and added a wire between two bolts, tail light to frame, to keep the lights working. SWing'R Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 I'd try and repair it with some liquid steel epoxy on the back, take the plate off, flatten out and apply the epoxy on the back side then maybe remount it in a plate frame holder rather then by itself, the frame holder may help hold the plates shape and equal out the vibration that caused the problem in the first place. S-13 Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 I havn't had good luck with plates at all. I lost my 30 day tag for the bike after my 3rd ride so I just rode with no plates for the rest of the 27 days (very surprisingly without getting stopped) I somehow had the sticker for my trailer on my truck plates one time and almost got arrested because of it. My front plate on my truck got completely mangled one time and I have no idea how it happened. I think I'm just going to make a completely sealed plexi glass container for my plate and then put in on a small trialer behind my bike so nothing can happen to it haha.
