2004 WRX Sportwagon

About a month or so ago, as the Project Frankenwagen hit a slow point due to parts delays we decided to pick up another ride to work on so here's what we found!

A little back story, this car was one of those "ran when parked" stories that almost never turn out to be true. Body is in pretty solid shape, interior is nice, its in the correct color and style but the engine wouldn't turn over. After sitting for a year due to the owner not having the time/money/energy to fix it we took a gamble yanked it out of the garage and onto the flat bed.

That evening after a short dinner/beers break we returned to the shop and decided to take a look at what we had purchased. One thing lead to another and the front end came off, engine came out, and the inspection began.

Unfortunately at this point we begin to notice a few things. The left front corner rides low, discover a snapped coil spring and destroyed strut. Also in this corner we find a badly mangled intercool pipe, the bracket holding the massive FMIC also is bent...along with the FMIC.. :(

So with the engine removed she goes on the back burner for a bit as we assess damage and start a build list. Tear down info coming in the next post!

This one will be for sale once we finish it, basically going to be a brand new 2004 Sport Wagon when we are done with it. :) Some of what was on it is salvageable, much of it was not.

The stock clutch and flywheel were so badly ragged that they were literally FUSED together which was an interesting problem to overcome. Once we dropped the oil pan out of the thing we were greeted with ..

Three of the 4 rods/bearings were so far gone/destroyed/warped/farked that we had to literally BEAT them off the crank shaft.

And or course as per typical when you blow up a Subaru..

So, in summary bottom end destroyed, top end not doing well, all sorts of chunky metal bits floating around and/or missing, intercooler and pipes broken, brakes nearly fused, suspension snapped... got our work cut out for us for sure!

Wow. Looks like someone tried to keep driving it after the motor was locking up. I bet the timing belt was shredded and the cams were junk too. Its to bad. They probably cracked the ringlands, burned up all the oil and tried to keep going. Either was sounds like it needs a long block

It will be up for sale once it's completely back together and we verify all issues are shaken down. Also need to put some mileage on the clutch/flywheel before we let her go as this will have our name on it.

Anyone interested in it though, we can certainly discuss once she's completed tuned and running right.

Kind of why we are building these things ;) Much love for these earlier generations of Subarus and who doesn't love a brand new 04-05 Subaru? Also you don't have to worry about "shade tree" fixes, everything is done properly and documented.

are you going full STi spec? or is it still going to be a mildly hopped up wrx. The one disappointment I had with the 04-07 body style is they never did the STi as a hatch back and it would have been a really awesome car if they did.

On this car it's going to be a hopped up WRX, the money just isn't there for us to build one of those without a buyer standing here cash in hand. Now with that said, we certainly COULD do one rather easily for someone should they be interested. I happen to have several 2.5 blocks in various states of "built up" that would certainly take care of that..

Just to bring this thread up to speed, engine is in, all piping installed, new Cobb Stage 2 tune installed for break in/shake down. All new Calipers/Pads/Rotors installed and looking smexy smexy, new suspension is on. Moving right along, time to do some oil changes and put miles on her!

  • 2 weeks later...

Completely rebuilt motor, everything down to the bolts. As for what's in it? Here's a list!

Tein Lowering Springs

KYB Front and rear struts

Cobb Intake

Ported intake manifold powder coated (purple)

VF39 Turbo

APS 725 FMIC with piping

Catless up-pipe

Full 3" Magnaflow Turbo Back exhaust

Hillman MBC set @15.5lbs

Fully rebuilt top and bottom end

New gaskets, seals, bearings, rods, pistons

ARP Headstud kit

New Subaru OEM Oil Pump

New waterpump/thermostat

New crank

New Flywheel, clutch, and throwout bearing

New Denso 02 sensors

Walbro 255 in tank pump

New stock painted calipers

Racing pads (front and rear)

Cross drilled high temp rotors (front and rear)

Cobb V1 AP Tuner running stage 3 tune

Misc:

Boost and AFR center cluster gauges

Short throw shifter

Yakima roof rack

Car is running on a very conservative tune right now but more than capable of putting down some serious power. As we didn't want to ruin fuel economy in case someone just is looking for a fun DD we left the stockers in however with some higher flowing ones, turn up the boost with a tune and you have quite a monster.

Going up for sale as we speak, asking $16000. Will make a post in the proper sub forum here in moments.
