dover Posted June 19, 2016 Report Share Posted June 19, 2016 I am stopping in London on my way home for a few days (4 days) in July and am trying to figure out what to do. So far I have google'd all the 'best' things to do but am looking for some personal experiences. What hotel? ~ I am looking at the Hilton Park Lane as my top choice right now. Chelsea,Hyde Park is the upscale end good for car spotting,I would think you could go visit some high end showrooms http://www.london.mclaren.com/news-and-gallery/take_a_tour_of_the_mclaren_london_showroom.... Pretend your relatives left you billions in farming futures and you want to get a cool ride to test drive and lord around in??? You could drive down to Bath for a day lots of stuff to see Roman baths cool architecture less commercial that would be pretty cool its a few hours away so hit Stonehenge while your at it. Lauren Posted June 19, 2016 Report Share Posted June 19, 2016 Take the train to Bournemouth and just walk around for a day. My favorite city in England. I have gone over to teach and loved every bit of it. If you are an outdoors person hit up the New Forrest national Park and hike and just take it all in. If you are stuck saying in London then just do all the major touristy stuff. For sure hit up a chippy for some great fish and chips and also if you are out late at night go to a kebab stand. Outstanding food. Side note the national dish in England is curry. They love there curry so get some of that as well. 87GT Posted June 19, 2016 Report Share Posted June 19, 2016 I spent two weeks in england and only one day in London. I wasnt really impressed. It felt like new York. I had more fun driving to other small towns and hitting up the only pub they had. British folk love to talk to strangers. Check out the tower of London if you are into castles. I'd spend a couple days just checking out all the traditional tourist spots and then just kind of get lost and wander around. We stayed in a holiday in right by heathrow because it was so much cheaper, but because public transportation is so good, it's really easy to get in and out of the city. Get yourself an oyster card which will cover buses and the underground. We also rented a car and drove out to Stonehenge, which was cool to see. Also drove down to Dover (like your name lulz), and stopped in Canterbury on the way down. It's a nice little town where you can go check out the cathedral, which is awesome...tons of history. In Dover there's Dover Castle, which is also very cool to check out. I remember the name of one of the pubs we went to, Golden Fleece in City of London. It's kind of in between Millennium Bridge and Tower Bridge, by the MI6 building. I wouldn't go out of your way to go there, but it was pretty cool. It's fantastic there. I'm not normally one to suggest museum visits as they can be very tedious and are, by nature, time consuming. However, London has 2 amazing museums that IMO are very important to see, and 1 is an absolute MUST. The British Museum is probably the most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the whole of human history anywhere in the world. No matter how much you know about the world and human history, you will learn twice as much as you know there. Controversy aside (lots of the artifacts have basically been stolen from other cultures and they want them back) things like the Rosetta Stone reside there. You need to dedicate an entire day to that place, but they also have guidance on things to see if you only have X amount of hours to spend there. The second place is the Natural History Museum which is very cool and obviously encompasses more about the world around us than our place in the world, but it is a VERY cool building. I would say the British Museum trumps the NHM in terms of importance. Also very cool is St. Paul's Cathedral. I'm not a religious person by any measure, but it's an amazing site to visit.
