Battery not staying charged

First let me say, I am new to motorcycles, so I know nothing. Be gentle with your answers.

A friend took me to a parking lot today to learn how to ride. I have a 1982 CB650. Found out the battery would not stay charged. The bike would be at an idle and it would die and not want to start up, only clicking if we were lucky.

When we were done riding my friend drove the bike home. It tried to start (like the battery had started to charge on the way home)

It is a new battery, got it on Sunday.

1- could it be a bad or not charged properly battery

2- could it be the stator or regulator

3- is there a way to test to determine what it is

4- where is the best place to buy parts

Silly question... Did you charge the battery fully before installing it?

I purchased it and they charged it. I was told it was charged and did not test it.

I am going to take it back to the store and have them test it and recharge it.

Try this....Start bike and disconnect the battery and see if the bike still runs.

If it does take a digital volt meter and test the leads (while disconnected) and test voltage coming out.Tell me what the reading is...

I will do this, I will PM you the info. It may be a few days however. I need to stop and get a volt meter and find a few minutes to do this.

Thanks

first get yourself a charger...Your gonna need it anyway when winter comes...fully charge the battery yourself and check it with a volt meter before you put it back in the bike...Second...Eagle had a good idea as well; that will lead you in the next direction..I'm pullin for ya...were all in this together....lmao at regreen...good luck..
