Driver Allegedly Fled Crash With Body In Window

(CBS) PERRIS, Calif. A man accused of fleeing the scene of a crash with the body of a motorcyclist stuck in the rear window of his car faces DUI, manslaughter and other charges, authorities said Tuesday.

Nicholas Justin Campbell, 20, of Moreno Valley, was eastbound on Highway 74 near Ethanac Road when a car pulled out of a parking lot and into his path shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, said Ron Thatcher of the California Highway Patrol.

The motorcyclist, who was traveling about 80 mph, crashed into the back of the car and his upper body went through the rear window, Thatcher said.

Tony Martinez, 54, of Perris, left the accident scene and went home, then drove to a nearby fire station with the body still in place.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the fire station 8:20 p.m., Thatcher said.

"He had to know he was in a crash because of the level of damage," Thatcher said. "That's why he (will be) charged with the hit-and-run. But because only half of the torso was in his car, the driver may not have seen it."

Martinez was booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence, with bail set at $75,000, Thatcher said.

District attorney's spokeswoman Ingrid Wyatt said the case was being reviewed, and no charges were expected to be filed before Wednesday.

There was a lady that did the same thing a few years back but she had a whole body stuck in her windshield. She drove home and parked it in the garage and called it a day.
