This happened last Sunday night - 5pm - June 27th, in Lancaster PA, and it's now starting to make national news. Investigators are still trying to figure out what happened. Three motorcycles collided with a taxi van in Lancaster, PA. Witnesses said it sounded like three shotgun shots going off. There was only one person in the van, but all three motorcycles were double up. The van was hit in the front and both sides. The van caught fire. All of the motorcycle riders except for one passenger died. And she's still in critical condition in the hospital. Later investigation appears to show that the van went left of center into the motorcycles. Speculation is that the taxi van driver had a stroke or seizure. Confusing the investigation is a wire from poles hanging down across the road, at the scene of the accident, and it's unknown why. Investigators have assembled a team to determine what happened, and don't expect results for weeks or months.

This is a terrible accident, and I think we can all say our sympathies and condolences are with the families in their time of grieving.

I would like to know what the driver of the van had to say. I hope he gets charged with the toughest criminal law that pertains to this. 5 lives taken, 1 side tracked and numerous ones changed forever! May God have mercy on their souls!

Dang, put away the torches, still under investigation, did you read the post completely...

Anyway, RIP riders.

Yep read it twice!! No torches from me.

But if the van was hit on 3 sides, I would have to say the van crossed and spun for some reason, just an educated guess and a gut feeling!

Plus its odd that the PO-PO would say the driver had some sort of medical issue that they haven't determined.

The speculation about a stroke or seizure came from comments in one of the news articles.

Commenter insinuated that the detail came from the surviving relatives.

Yes, most of the investigators and EMTs believe the van spun, from impact or otherwise.

Man charged in Pa. motorcycle crash that killed 5

The Associated Press

Updated: 09/03/2010 04:26:15 PM EDT

LANCASTER, Pa.—A taxi driver with a history of traffic violations caused a June crash that killed five motorcyclists in central Pennsylvania, authorities said Friday. Alfred Moore, 64, was arraigned late Thursday on vehicular homicide charges in the June 27 crash involving his cab and three motorcycles in Penn Township in Lancaster County.

Moore also faces two counts of recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and disregarding a traffic lane.

Police found that Moore, who has had diabetes for 15 years, had severely low blood sugar at the time of the crash, the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era newspaper and WGAL-TV reported.

"There's no doubt that he made a conscious disregard to maintain his medical condition, which led to these terrible results," Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said at a news conference. "Mr. Moore was aware of his condition. He was aware of the inherent risks of his condition if he did not eat. And he chose to take the risk."

Two married couples died in the collision: Samuel and Linda Lapp, both 48, of New Holland; and Dennis Wilhelm, 43, and his wife Amy, 50, of Manheim Township. Joshua Pennington, 27, of East Earl also died. Kristin Skowood, 27, also of East Earl, was the lone motorcycle rider to survive the crash.

Minutes before the crash, a passenger in Moore's van demanded that he be let out because Moore was driving erratically, swerving into oncoming traffic and hitting road signs as he reached speeds of 90-100 mph, according to the criminal complaint. Moore has a long history of traffic violations and had his drivers license suspended twice in 2008, the newspaper reported, and he had two dozen violations and paid nearly $3,000 in fines since 2002.

The paper also reported Moore was driving a Harrisburg City Cab at the time of the crash. A voicemail message left with a phone listing for the company was not immediately returned Friday.

Moore was being held at the Lancaster County Prison after failing to post $50,000 bail following his arraignment. It was not clear if he had an attorney.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10.
