SAMBUSA Posted August 10, 2010 Report Share Posted August 10, 2010 A Harrod man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a deer Saturday night. 67 year old Thomas Helser was riding his motorcycle on Peeve Road, when a deer ran across the roadway from an adjacent field, into his path. Helser was unable to avoid the collision, and upon impact was ejected from the motorcycle. The Lafayette emergency squad transported Helser to Lima Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities say alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and Helser was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The Ohio Department of Public Safety reports there have been over six hundred motorcycle fatalities this year an increase from last year by about 63 deaths. Sgt. Rick Sanchez with the state patrol says the highway patrol post in Lima is working toward reversing those numbers. I had pick my jaw up off the floor after reading that figure. I thought it had been a better year than last. It seemed like we were losin more last year. That date last year it was 82. Motorcycle fatalities increased nearly 35 percent between 2006 and 2008. Although there was a drop in motorcycle deaths in 2009, there has been a seven percent increase this year. However, these numbers are preliminary.2009 saw a decrease in fatalities. So any reference to percentage increase that compares this year to last year will look larger than normal. An estimate would be a 5 year averaging, which is 180 per year. At the start of August, that portion would be 105. So 88 is well below a five year averaging. Specifically, this year to date, is 16% lower than a five year trending.edit: I think maybe they meant 600 highway deaths, or maybe even 600 deer related deaths, dunno. Interesting data:Most deer-vehicle collisions occur between October and January during the deer-breeding season. According to data from the Ohio Department of Public Safety and ODNR, peak hours for these collisions in 2006 occurred between 6:00-10:00 p.m. followed by 5:00-8:00 a.m. In 2006, 56 percent of these accidents occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., while 22 percent occurred in the early morning between 5:00-8:00 a.m. (2006 Ohio deer-vehicle collisions by time and day). In 2008 there were 4,967 Ohio motorcycle crashes with 4,430 injuries. I still got no clue what the 600 is.edit: In 2008 there were 686,975 registered Ohio motorcyclists. The largest county is Franklin, with 47,003.Not the best odds, one in 138 will crash. About 7/10th of 1%.
