My teenage years were spent reading every SW book the library had, but I still don't like him. Did Lucas add a scene in the re-release of IG-88 or Bossk? Nope, because they don't sell as many action figures. Most people aren't well read on this subject and the fan worship only goes as far as "he looks cool." Did the extended universe make him more interesting? Yeah it did, but the buzz started a while before that.

Someone in costume design did a great job on him back in the day, no doubt, but that's no reason for all of the fan worship.
