  1. Columbus as of the 2010 Census was 61.5% white, 28% black.  At that time the mayor, police chief, 6 of 7 on the school board (and its president) and 7/7 on city council were black.

Columbus still has the same mayor, but now 4 of 7 on both council and the school board are black, and the police chief's a white lesbian.

Assuming the people in charge are good people, race <shouldn't> be an issue, though the governed may see it that way, for whatever reason.

  2. I sincerely hope that Mr. Brown did, in fact, get into a fight with the officer and the shooting of him was justified.

If the facts play out otherwise and he was, for lack of a better word, murdered; that will only further erode the public's (of all hues) waning trust of law enforcement.

  3. I've been absent from this forum for more than a year for a variety of reasons, but I couldn't let this pass without comment...

What part of this article do you not find serious?

Being white, you experience positive profiling from law enforcement, i.e. you're white, you aren't dressed "like a gangster", thus you won't get much scrutiny.

My girlfriend lives in Chicago.  She's black (actually, a beautiful shade of brown).  She has an advanced degree from a private school , earns well into the 6 figures, and is always dressed well.

She gets followed in stores to this day.  Believe it or not, but it's true.  Not every store, obviously, but it does happen.

She told me last night that she's so thankful she has a daughter instead of a son, and that her daughter has two girls, not boys.  She knows what <could> happen to black men...she experiences racism as a black woman.

If you don't believe that "white privilege" exisits, if you don't believe that law enforcement treats black people differently than white people, then you're kidding yourself.

  4. Until open carry becomes as commonplace as wearing blue jeans, some portion of "the public" is going to be startled when they see someone who isn't dressed as a policeman carrying a gun.

Some will be startled enough to call 911 and report a MWAG.

Is it the 911 operator's job to determine if the call warrants dispatching an officer? Dunno, I don't work in law enforcement. I, personally, would rather a trained LEO investigate and determine what, if anything, needs to be done. Better safe than sorry. 5 minutes out of his/her shift to go somewhere doesn't seem unreasonable to me - better than someone getting hurt/killed because the MWAG actually was intent on doing harm.

If someone decides that answering a (seemingly) innocuous request from a LEO for a name is not infringing upon their rights, what's the problem? Each of us can decide whether or not we want to answer ("comply", if you will).

I'm not allowed to carry in any manner into a post office. Is that not an infringement of my 2nd amendment rights?

I have the right to go to the Statehouse lawn and bitch publicly about anything I want to - I choose not to. Have I set back the cause of Free Speech for everyone else by choosing to keep silent?

I'm not going to fault anyone for talking to a police officer, nor will I fault them for choosing to not answer any questions. It's the individual's decision to make, not mine to make (or bully toward my way of thinking) for them. Answer/comply, refuse to answer/not comply - don't care.

semi-tangent: As to the earlier post in this thread about the 3" knife - remember that there is NO length of knife that you're allowed to carry concealed, as a weapon, in Ohio. Period. You're carrying "a tool", not "a weapon". As I've said before, cut some boxes with it and leave the tape residue on it as "proof" that it's a "tool".

  5. Anybody in Northern Ohio use Virgin Mobile? Wanting to get my first smart phone and was wondering what the service and coverage is like?

    first "smart" phone?

DO NOT play with the Internet on a 4G phone and then buy a 3G phone...you'll be very unhappy. Stick with 3G - ignorance is bliss. 3G v 4g = 1970 cb250 v. 2012 BMW S1000rr, or at least it seems that way.

i have a Samsung Galaxy s3, 4.8" screen, and I cannot use teh intarwebz for more than about 1 minute - although others seemingly live on their phone. For me, 3G would be enough, but if you want to surf a lot, you almost have to have 4G.

Maybe (well, I am) I'm old, but i simply cannot use the phone for Internet very long, so 4G v 3G makes little difference to me. Text and e-mail retrieval - network seems to make no difference.

  6. update/fix the shit out of it, and then it's "f*ck! this is a nice place! I don't wanna move".

been there, done that 4 times. now that there's no female involved it's A LOT easier...

...oh yeah, nice work! not surprising, based upon what transpired in the garage...

  7. no idea...

in all honesty though, the place has had issues. One might be led to think that management is less than 'engaged'...

'somewhat troublesome' seems an apt, if not kind description of The Powder Room.

    imho, and my $0.022 worth.

  8. they use the Sprint mobile network.

if a Sprint phone works where you are, a VM phone should work.

    $35/month, 400 talk minutes, unlimited text/data.

*edit: have one for my boy - works fine in central Ohio.

  9. In Ohio, if you ever for any reason drop any endorsement off your license, and then go to get it back later, you must restart the whole process over again. I know it sucks but its true.

everyone with a motorcycle endorsement needs to read this and remember it, because the dolt behind the counter could not care less whether or not she puts your endorsement back on your license.

you'd think it would be automatic, but you'd be wrong.

when you renew your license, check it before you leave, or better yet mention the endorsement when you hit the counter.

Hell if you want to really know a shitty manuver they use to tap you for more money, dont ever fall late on getting your licenses for your vehicles or drivers, its an additional $20 charge if your late for EACH license.

more than 6 months and you get to start all over again: temps, driving test, annoyance, elevated hatred of the BMV, etc...

  10. *brakes

shoulda let the truck go on through, then you could have continued on your way...

for fogged up face shield, try regular (not gel) toothpaste. some folks swear by CatCrap brand no-fog stuff, but I've not tried it.
