  1. I finally managed to snag a cheap track bike, so it looks like I'll be holding some of you bastards up in the keyhole this year. A few questions to start off:

    • From what I gather, it looks like some (relatively) close tracks are Mid-O, Nelson, Putnam, and PittRace, Grattan prolly if I stay overnight. I've done MO a few times a few years back when they did those KTM days, but that's all I know. Any others, and anything big to be aware of at those tracks?
    • Is anybody else in Delaware or close enough to maybe split some rides/tows/gas occasionally? I have a smaller SUV that can tow a small trailer (prolly 2 bikes max), but as of now I have to deal with the pain-in-the-assery of renting from U-Haul as I don't have my own trailer.
    • Are there any discounts offered at any of the local tracks or track day orgs? I'm thinking group buys, forum discounts, multi-pass pricing, veteran's discounts, anything really.
    • Are pets allowed at any of them? My 100 lb. feces generator has made it clear on several occasions he's not happy being locked in the house for 15 hours at a time.

Feel free to chime in with whatever other advice/insults you see as appropriate.

  2. jbot: You've got PM.

Dizzle:  I'm pretty sure whatever internals are normally there are in the one I have. It was just taken off whole after going down. I tried loosening the bolt to get the bar end off at one point and couldn't figure out the black magic Triumph used to keep it in there, so whatever holder is in there is apparently still holding. And I don't have the bike any more so I'm not really interested in trades. Unless you've got an XR650R front master cylinder in decent shape...

  3. I've had some parts off my old 675 laying around for a while and want them gone. It was a 2007 so these will at least fit a first-gen bike. Some might fit the 2013+ models but you'd have to verify that yourself. Figured I'd see if anybody here has any use for them before I toss them up on Fleabay. A link to some pics are down at the bottom but if you want more let me know. And all of this is OBO. I've had this crap laying around for way too long and just want it out of the house.

    • GSG frame sliders, the ones that mount through the swingarm pivot bolt, and it comes with a spare right-side slider (install instructions here): $70. And don't be too paranoid about hollowing out the swingarm bolt. We're talking half a mm. Could probably do it with a file if you had time to kill.
    • Gray tank, excellent shape. There is a nick in the paint on the left side, but it's small and not dented. No leaks. I've taken off the gaudy tank protector since I took the pics too. $250.
    • Rashed left fairing. Looks worse in pics than it is (I know, everybody says that). Black marks are tar or rubber that scrapes off, but there's a gouge I'm pointing to in one of the pics (white line). Might be good for a track bike or a replacement for a completely toasted fairing. All mounting tabs are still intact. $20.
    • Rear tail light. Basically brand new as it was immediately replaced with an LED. $10?
    • Busted-up left clipon. It's straight, but that's all it's got going for it. Might be good if you'll be putting your own bar ends and grips on. $whocares.

I've also got some random other pieces floating around that I haven't checked over totally for condition. I know I have a headlight assembly that I think is clean and some other busted up fairing pieces that might be ok for a track bike. If you're looking for something specific, just ask. I might have it laying around.

    PICS!

  4. Ha, yea it's pretty bad out here. He does have insurance, but his rates will go up and he won't get jack all for the bike since it was liability only.

If he only has liability and nobody caught the lady, why even bother telling the insurance company then? The only thing they'll do at this point is raise his rates so I'd say leave them out of it. Sucks enough to pay for replacement parts but at least he could avoid the rate hike.

  5. the lifetime warranty is only for the original owner fyi

Nope - right off their homepage: "All Hi-Point firearms carry a lifetime, no-questions asked warranty. Whether you are the original purchaser, or a third-hand owner, your Hi-Point firearm will be repaired free of charge."

    http://www.hi-pointfirearms.com/

From what I've heard, if you have to send it in for repairs they'll send a free mag along when they return it.

  6. If you're already looking at Hi-Points, another option would be their 9mm carbine. Cheap(ish) ammo, fun to shoot, lifetime warranty, 9mm recoil is easy to handle in carbine form, and easier to keep on target than a handgun. Wifey might have issues with a "black gun" though.

This is all assuming you have no issues with having a Hi-Point in the first place - I know the subject of having one for home defense (or at all) can get some people fired up.

  7. I was a sophomore in college and woke up to one of the other guys yelling "Holy shit" at the TV. Rolled out of bed, saw the hole from the first plane and just thought somebody clearly overpaid for flight lessons. Got a shower and when I came out the second one hit. Then everybody knew what was happening.

I distinctly remember the AIM conversation with my girlfriend at that point:

    me: you awake?

    her: yeah, why?

    me: turn on the tv

    her: what channel?

    me: it doesn't matter

Just as I was leaving for class the first tower collapsed. My school was about 1.5 hours from NYC so a good portion of students had parents/family that worked in the city, if not the towers. The entire class was people asking "Did anybody hear from XXX's dad? What about YYY's brother?" Halfway through a girl that was a complete mess came in and said classes were canceled for the day. Her dad worked in the towers.

The rest of the day was just keeping an eye on the tv to see what would happen next. I remember rumors at one point of the White House being hit, then somebody said another plane hit the Pentagon, etc... It took a good day or two for all the rumors to work their way out of the system and find out what the damage really was.

Ironically Sept 12 was supposed to be the day I drove down to the Pentagon for the final interview for a military scholarship I was in the running for. Needless to say it was postponed for a while... and it was a phone interview. Visitors weren't quite as welcome there in the following weeks.

  8. FWIW - I have a Profile that had one of the side pods pop off recently. Got in contact with Arai since it was still under warranty and luckily their place was only 45 min. from my parents, so I just dropped it off on my way there.

Got talking to one of the guys and apparently they've had issues with the older generations of those side pods (obviously). One thing they did mention is that they've found Windex (or any typical window-cleaning stuff) weakens the plastic inside the pods. Some guys hose down their helmet with it and there's no good way for it to get out once it's in those pods, and over the years it just turns the plastic brittle and it eventually just lets loose. So when they say the best way to clean it is warm water, they mean it!
