The normal "school zone" rules apply to K-12.

Higher education is different.

You are allowed to have a gun in your car on college grounds.

However, that doesn't mean that a university can't kick you out even though you are legal.

As for signs, anything that prohibits guns is a legal sign, even a sketch of a revolver with a slash through it drawn in crayon. However, outside of a building, it is only civil trespass. That means they have to sue you in civil court for the damages you have caused (?). Inside a posted building is a criminal offense.

Most of us with a CHL try to be law abiding citizens even when we disagree with the law.

I believe Indiana permits 18 year olds to have a CHL but not Ohio.

The laws are murky with things like someone cannot sell to an 18 yo but a parent can furnish to an 18 yo. But even if an 18 yo can have a handgun, no way AFAIK for them to carry concealed.

Basically, I am confused how we allow an 18yo to join the military and die for their country but are not afforded the Constitutionally recognized right "to keep and bear arms." Our gov't is screwed up....but then you already knew that.

My favorites for IWB are the Milt Sparks VMII.

I've never taken to the plastic holsters. I have one that wore the finish off on a new Kimber in a week. I mostly blame the thin Kimber finish for that but the holster didn't help.

I would support that as well. I see no prob with having to demonstrate you can hit your target if you want to carry a gun. I actually wouldn't mind seeing the minimum standards increased a lil too. Any moron picking up a gun for the first time can hit the required minimum standards as they are now.

And how does that fit into "shall not be infringed"? Oh, nothing stops someone from open carrying without any class or training or qualification. So just because I have it under my jacket I need to redemonstrate that I know which end of a gun the bullet comes out of? And if I can occasionally hit a paper plate with a .22, then I'm "qualified" to carry a .44 magnum?

Don't forget the cost and inconvenience of scheduling the requalification.

FYI, for the second renewal (aka 10 years later), it is a shooting re-qualification not another full on course.

We can hope that will be improved by the time 2014 come around and the first batch of people need their second renewal. It hasn't been a priority yet.

AFAIK, there is no transferring of a license from one state to Ohio. He will have to go through the process just as if he is starting from scratch. 12 hour class including range time. Fill in the paperwork and wait for it to be approved. Heck, even for someone in Ohio, that's required for the second renewal.

I spent $500 on a Browning Hi-power that jammed all the time. Sold it. 2 years later bought a beautiful blued $700 Browning Hi-power that jammed all the time. I will never own one again.

Years ago I bought a Browning. Absolutely horrible trigger, I sometimes thought the safety was on. Traded it. Later bought another Browning (they feel really good in the hand). Same trigger, plus the front sight broke off in under 500 rounds! Never again a Browning.

A few years later I picked up a FEG for half the price of the Browning. Good reliable gun! I still have it.

Wilson Combat has a video on how to tune extractors. I would try changing the recoil spring. And maybe the magazine spring.

I've gotten used to fighting these problems, I bought a Kimber a couple of years ago. Never again...

Novaks will do a "reliability" tune on the gun for you. They have a great reputation....but costly...

To clarify the answer to the OP:

If you have a CHL, yes you can legally leave it in the car, loaded. Common sense suggest that it be hidden or locked up, but that is not a legal requirement.

If you do not have a CHL, then the handgun must be unloaded and secured separately from the ammo, and out of reach while driving. Having a loaded magazine or speedloader equals a "loaded gun" in Ohio even if the magazine is locked up in the trunk.

If a gun is stolen, it needs to be reported to the police.

This is all Ohio law, btw. In Kentucky, it is legal to have a loaded handgun in the glove compartment even without a CHL.

its funny seeing that grip on there....when i was looking at colt defenders the only thing i was hearing is that everyone hates those hogue wrap around grips and its the first thing they changed

I have to agree with you. My Sig P220 has finger groove grips and I don't like them.

As to the OP, well I've bought new grips a few times but always end up back with the factory originals. What looks good off the gun has never impressed me all that much on the gun. Maybe it's just that I've too used to seeing the originals and anything else just doesn't look right!

That $36,000 you feel you "saved" won't pay for two days of ICU care after a serious accident. You want to skimp, yes, that should be your right, but then be man enough to live (or die) with the consequences of your decision.

Just FYI, according to Ohio law, if you are armed and sitting on a motorcycle, the law considers the handgun "concealed" even if it's visible 100' away. And you need a CHL to have a "concealed" handgun.

I have to wonder why a .380 case is so oversized. Perhaps someone was shooting it in a 9mm (9x19)? If so, I would not trust it at all. Your finding some split suggests the same. Toss it into the scrap bucket.

I have reloaded .380 but I don't recall any brass that was split or significantly oversize.

You can get alloy frames in 4 and 5" 1911s. You can get steel frames in 3" ones.

now my dilemma is 3" or 5"....i dont get to the range much, and the 3" would be easier to carry...

You can compromise with a 4 or 4.25 inch barrel

Actually the shorter commander length grip is the biggest thing that makes a 1911 easier to carry and conceal. Barrel length is less of an issue.

You also lose about 50 fps velocity per inch as you shorten the barrel. A .45 isn't a speed demon to start with.

I feel safer carrying my 1911 over my glock g29 10mm. Only reason being the safety. My next 1911 will be a 10mm and the glock will be sold.

9mm +P ammunition has more than enough power to take out an attacker.

There is NO handgun round which reliably has "more than enough power" to take out an attacker. All handgun rounds are marginal. There are plenty of real life reports of 2-4-8 good shots failing to immediately stop a bad guy. The only sure way to immediately stop an attacker is with a CNS hit (central nervous system, e.g. brain or spinal cord). Chances of such a hit while you are under attack is fairly small.

Now as for "accidental discharge", there are many instances where guns have gone off while being reholstered. In some cases, it was a poor holster that interfered with the trigger. In other cases a shirt or jacket tail. Or sometimes it is just some klutz that had his finger in the wrong place. But there are numerous examples, especially of Glocks, discharging while being holstered. There is virtually zero chance of that happening with a 1911 with the thumb safety engaged.

Do I have to have a thumb safety? No, my other carry guns (Sigs and revolvers) do not. But those guns have a longer trigger pull than a Glock.

Why not just carry a sub compact 9 and use the .45 as the range toy/ SHTF pistol? Only holster I'd have sitting around for a .45 is one for open carry. I don't see the point in carrying around something that big. I know it'd pull my pants off my butt.

And I'm sorry, but who wants a safety on your CCW? I'm assuming if I need to pull out my gun I don't have any extra time to spare turning off my safety. I want to pull my gun out and only have to worry about pulling the trigger and that's it. You don't know what you're going to do in a high stress situation, and I'm sure most of us here haven't been put in a situation where we really needed to draw on someone, so we don't know how we'll react. It at least won't be second nature.

Well to answer some of your questions:

If the gun is pulling your pants down, then you have the wrong pants and/or wrong belt.

Sure, no safety on a defensive gun. Glocks have a lot more accidental discharges than a 1911. IF YOU PRACTICE, there is no delay swiping off the safety. Mine comes off as the gun clears the holster, automatically. A 1911 with it's single action trigger, gives you a consistent trigger action from first shot to follow up shots, something that does not happen with a traditional SA/DA gun. Safety is provided on a SA/DA gun by having a long, stiff trigger pull for the first shot. A 1911 has the same crisp action for all shots.

Of course there are many fine guns out there and almost as many opinions as to which is preferred. YMMV.

The 1911 (and the BHP) are among the thinnest full sized guns and that helps concealability.

From a concealment standpoint, it doesn't make a difference if you have a 3", 4", or 5" if you carry IWB since all the barrel is inside.

1911s tend to be on the heavy side, so a good holster is important, as well as proper fitting pants. If the pants are just snug enough, they will take most of the weight instead of putting it all on the belt.

In general, reliability decreases if you get below 4".

Springfield and Dan Wesson are probably the most reliable although S&W and (newer) Sigs have good reputations too. The new Ruger seems to be an excellent gun with a lower price point and good reliability. Rock Island is probably the best bang for the buck.

For something small, lighter weight, and concealable, the Springfield EMP in 40SW or 9mm is a really good gun although they are not cheap.

If you do go to a 1911 type gun, you need to practice, practice, practice until flipping off the safety is just natural. Under stress of a real self defense situation, you do not want to pull the trigger and find that it will not fire because the safety is still engaged.

You are just riding the wrong roads. Sure, if you stick to the nice and easy roads like US 52 or US 68 there will be tons of riders out there on a nice day.

OTOH, pick an out of the way twisty and all of the cruisers disappear. Problem solved Pick something like SR781, SR763, Lick Skillet Road, Fishing Gut Road, and you won't be bothered by all those waving bikers:D:D:D

I've officially (in my own mind) decided that I am tired of the whole waving-at-other-riders-on-the-road thing. I even penned a crappy acronym for it (Riders Against Waving). Dorky?? Absolutely.

I had to run errands on Sunday morning, and there were a TON of bikes out around here (Cin-Day corridor). I was hoping to get out and ride for a little while on Sun afternoon/ evening, but in the back of my head was something about "so many riders, and they'll all want to wave"...

So I get my chores done, and head out for a quick ride about 3:30. Still lots of bikes, but NOBODY waved except one guy on a blacked-out CBR in Miamisburg (okay, I did sorta wave at him. I admit it). The lack of waving was AWESOME. FWIW, this type of stuff is what would keep me from buying a Jeep as well (well, that, AND the whole bailout thing).

Like it said on a t-shirt which I saw the other day, "I'm not mean, I just don't like you". Gotta find me one of those.

A lot of people ask me why I'm not riding when it's so nice out at night. This is the reason why. Deer are ALL OVER the place where I live. It sucks a big one not to ride when it's this nice out but I'm not going to risk it.

Yeh, and lets hope the Ohio conservation department doesn't open the deer hunting seasons up any, like most other states have. Idiots they are. Can't figure the increased monies they will be getting, or the decrease in the number of deer out there.

DNR wants to keep their fees high no matter how much property damage and human injury their deer cause. We need to make DNR start paying for the damage, then they would start to care.
