Hondas usually need TB and waterpumps around 100k so I would see if that's been done recently. Timing chains are less worry since the first thing to fail, if they even do, are the chain guides. There are no other common problems with the corolla other than what I had previously stated. Well aware of the oil problem, I was actually in the market for one of these before I bought my VW.. just couldn't find the exact S model that I wanted.

Ask the owner if he's ever had any problems with the car.. find out if it's on it's second motor or not and check the oil dipstick to see if it's low. If the car is running, always check for blue smoke, CEL or anything out of the ordinary. I would just ask some simple questions about general maintenance that might give you any hints about how well it was kept. There is a way to tell by looking at the block code if it's the problematic engine or not, I'm looking it up as I type this. They made some changes mid-year to solve the oil burning issues.

I've seen upwards of 135 in mine(on an enclosed course ) but I would tach out around 150 for sure. What does the argument include as far as mods? Are you talking completely stock, or fairly tuned? I have no doubt that a GTI with a GT3071r could hit 180 but it would take some work to get there.

I've grown pretty fond of boost since I bought my VW.. but you still can't get over the sound of a well built high-revving N/A car. Not to mention the throttle repsonse over boosted applications.

I'm no expert, nor am I a certified technician, but I'd be more than happy to help you. It's a lot of fun tearing them apart and putting them back together.. you get to see everything come together infront of your eyes. But a chiltons or haynes manual does wonders in instructing procedues and specs when you have to disassemble and reassemble. Hell, if you can get your hand on a Factory Repair Manual, you're in the money. I've done this two times myself now, on both of my 4AG engines, both without problem.

No Corollas are going to retain value much better than the Civic. Finding parts is the same if not easier than a honda... BUT I am pretty biased even though hondas are great cars. ONLY, thing I will recommend is making sure that corolla doesn't burn oil.. the 1zz had problems with rings going bad- particularly that year.

Jeff, great work you've done so far! On the other hand my VW wasn't doing so hot. My car still had overheating symptoms on the highway after the coolant change and thermostat change from my TB service. I just bit the bullet and replaced my CTS and my Radiator so hopefully that will help..
