How did I miss this until now. This is awesome!

Much respect to you & your family and the honor you're showing them through this project. I'm sure they're right there with you during every turn of the wrench. Having learned to drive on a '51 3100, I am very interested in the rebuild. Congrats on bringing your childhood dreams to reality. That first drive will no doubt be full of laughs, tears and smiles! Keep up the good work!

Assuming the block is in good shape, and it's all there I would price it in the 5-700 range. Really that's just the block and crank. With parts being readily available today as they are Rods, Pistons, heads etc will get tossed in favor for aftermarket pieces.
I've got the pistons for it too, but they'd probably need gone through and would most likely end up being more cost effective to buy new.
Checked with my father who has had and built several for circle track cars. He said between $3-500 considering the block is the only thing of value. How would a 400 sbc crank not be of any value?

A number of years ago, I picked up a "509" casting 400 sbc short block. I don't see anywhere in the near future where I'll end up using this motor, especially now that I have an Oldsmobile. I know that its difficult to gauge what something like this would be worth sight unseen, but if anyone has a ballpark idea, it might help me decide if I'll end up parting with it or holding on to it. The short block is disassembled currently.

I got my first estimate back today and feel like I can do a lot better.
I'll be making a few more calls this week to those mentioned here.

We all hate them, but they've been around longer than most of us have been alive, so it's nothing new. We just know that they don't actually mean anything. As with jump'n'jive, ignore and move on.

Proud and excited for my brother-in-law to be back doing sports after two years away. He was chosen to be the lead in-studio anchor for this year's Buckeye Fever pre & post game shows. Nathan was the sports director in Dayton for 8 years before getting out of the news, but the draw of Buckeye football pulled him back in.
