  1. We drove down this trail for about a half a mile then came up on the snow in the next video and had to back all the way out.It was pretty nail biting backing up on the shelf road.

  2. Mitch suggested I do this in another thread so here goes.

     

    I bought a really nice 95 T100 SR5 5 speed a while ago to drive to work and to drive out in the mountains so I didn't tear up our cars on the rough roads. The interior is perfect and I haven't found any rust anywhere on the truck at all working on it. I replaced the timing belt/water pump/oil pump, replaced all the intake gaskets and cleaned the intake/throttle body, and replaced all the suspension bushings and steering parts. It's pretty much a new truck except for the paint that I don't really care about because I'm taking it off roading too.

    We've been going off roading pretty much every weekend, and sometimes on Wednesdays since I've been taking them off because of the corona slowness at work.

    Wednesday we went to Argentine pass and McLellan mountain. There are 2 ways up, a pretty easy way that a regular SUV can do(it's just bumpy), and a really rough way. We did the really rough way. There were a couple times when I didn't know if we would make it but both mine and my buddies tundra surprised the hell out of me. Both are completely stock trucks, so I figured without a locker one of us wouldn't make it through something but we both did fine.

    Anyways, here are some pics of where we ended up going.

  3. Very jealous of your available off-road options. I would love to do an overlanding trip out there.

     

    I live about 30 minutes from rampart range an off road trail area for atvs and 50” SxSs. There’s more than 100 miles of OHV trails and also quite a few jeep trails and thousands of dispersed camping spots.

     

    We’re going to go camping with friends off of guenella pass tomorrow and then Sunday go do Argentine pass. There’s all kinds of old log cabins and mines and mills everywhere and the views are amazing. It’s basically a desert so no mud to get stuck in, but it is mostly rocks. We’re getting to where it’s all we do on the weekends.

  4. I bought a really nice T100 last year and rebuilt all of the suspension and steering and did timing belt/ water pump/oil pump. We started going off roading and camping this spring on the easier trails and have worked our way up to some pretty rough ones lately. We have a blast and get to see some amazing places. Most of the mountains are public land with forestry roads everywhere. I’m planning on doing a rear locker soon because I think I’m going to need it.
  5. On my Silverado I had a QTP 4” about 4’ from the turbo. After that was a magnaflow 3 1/2” cat back. I thought it sounded pretty good with it closed. It was tame and you couldn’t really hear t turbo at all. With it open it sounded like a monster and the turbo screamed. You could hear it spool up and down and the blow off was rediculous. I never had any problems with it ever. It picked up 15 hp/20 tq with it open.

     

    Brian. If it loosens up all the time why wouldn’t you just have it welded in.

  7. Colorado made a new traction law this year. If you get stopped on a highway in “severe weather” without 2wd and snow tires or awd/4wd and at least all seasons you get a fine between $130 and $650. All tires have to have at least 3/16” tread. On 70 just west of Denver for 127 miles it’s required from september to the end of may no matter what the weather is.
  8. I did the timing belt/water pump/and oil pump on my T-100 this spring. It was pretty straight forward. There’s plenty of room once the radiator is out to sit under the truck and have it right in front of you.

    The only problem I had was I broke a reluctor tooth off of the timing gear on the crank with my hand when I tried it without the puller. They have pretty much everything for the 3.4L at the dealership because they put them in everything.

    I think from draining the radiator to filling it back up took around 5 hours counting the hour to go to the dealership.

  9. Buckley is cool to work at, getting to see the jets and helicopters. I’ve worked on the giant hangar doors maybe 10 times in the last couple of years.

  10. We'll be in Aurora, near or on Buckley. I don't know if I'd be trying to do anything that extreme off-road.

    If you’re only going to be going camping and driving on dirt roads you’ll be fine with a 4wd Colorado. That’s mostly what we do, but when you do go off road it gets rough quick. Some times the snow does come hard and fast and unexpected so good tires are a must. It snowed 10” 2 weeks ago with no mention of snow on the weather until the same day.

     

    You’ll love it out here. More than 300 sunny days a year with really low humidity. You can see the mountains from pretty much everywhere. We wish we would have moved here 20 years ago.

  11. When I moved out here to Colorado I ended up selling my Silverado because I couldn’t register it here because of emissions with the 6L swap. I ended up buying an STI for a fun car, and an really nice t100 truck to take out in the mountains. I think a fun car and an older 4Runner or something similar would be better than a new truck. Off road here is a lot different because there are so many rocks instead of dirt/mud like you’re probably used to. I looked at a lot of trucks/suvs before I bought my truck. I decided I’d be better off with something I wasn’t always worried about scratching or scraping up against a big rock. After buying and doing all the maintenance that was never done to it (timing belt/water pump/oil pump and all new suspension everything) and new tires(BFG A/T KO2)I have less than $5500 into it. I also dd it most of the time to work.

     

    I would wait until you get out here before you get something you think you want and wish you hadn’t later. We go out to the mountains every weekend and I wouldn’t want a new truck to go to some of the awesome places that are out here.

  12. I see in the picture with your spring hanging down that the frame bumper has fallen off like every older Silverado. You’re going to want to pick up some shorter aftermarket bump stops to replace them with. When you haul something in it or hit a big bump that low you will hit and it sounds horrible.

  13. My 6.0L truck had very little lag with a 76mm/.96ar turbo. All of my friends had cars/trucks with blowers and were very surprised how little lag it had. If you’re going for under 650whp you could do a smaller turbo and it would have no lag. Turbo is different in a 5-6000 pound truck than a 3-4000 pound car. I’d get an On3 kit and get the manifolds planed before installing so they don’t leak.
  14. I talked to a fire fighter that explained this to me. All the township fire departments try to do controlled burns in areas that need them to happen. They keep an eye on all the area they cover and set up when and where they need to do them. Most are in very remote areas of federal land that are unpopulated. People that live anywhere remotely close to where they say they need to do a controlled burn start petitions and lawsuits to stop them because they don’t want to smell smoke for a day or two and stop it from happening. The fire departments have to fight for a couple years to get it to happen but by then it takes way longer to get it cleared enough for it to be an actual controlled burn. They get so far behind on controlled burns because of the people fighting it that they can’t catch up because there’s always a fight. Everywhere gets overgrown then giant fires happen that take weeks to put out and burn into populated areas. They try and if they could do controlled burns when and where they need to they couldn’t stop them all but they could stop most.

If you search the forum you will find lots of people that have done what you are planning to do. It’s the truck side of LS1tech.

  17. I think this is a really good idea out here in Colorado. I found a 95 t-100 sr5 without a spot of rust on it that’s now my daily. It only took about an hour and a half to change all 4 ball joints and all 4 tie rod ends. I get shocked when I see 80s and 90s dodge trucks that are just worn out instead of completely rusted out like back in Ohio. Good luck, I think you might have found something that you can make some decent money doing.
