D30 back protector $21.99 British Pounds

21.99 GBP = 34.9762 USD

Icon D30 back protector at Revzilla $25.00

Here's the product list at the website:

http://www.d3o.com/markets/motorcycle/

What I see in a google search is that currently Icon and Klim sell back, shoulder, and knee inserts.

looks like a non newtonian fluid, like supersaturated cornstarch.  The back protector would be good for impacts but not for hyperextension.  I don't think putting it in a helmet would make sense, since since it hardens up on impact....transferring the shock to your skull and brain; just the opposite of what you want to happen.  Hip guards and things like that are an interesting concept since it would conform and distribute the load over a larger area.

You saw him whack his buddy in the head with the shovel right? Seems like it spread the impact pretty good.

Spreading the impact over an area works for the shovel because it is a relatively light impact.....hit someone on the head with a shovel and it will hurt and maybe break the skin and bone, but it wont cause the brain to smash up against the inside of their skull and cause real damage.  You need to surround the head with a crumple zone to extend the impact over time, lessening the internal blow.
