1911's only, no polymer, nothing but 1911's

Looking to get some feelings on 1911's, just a house gun and plinking, not carrying, but something to have in the house and use at the range only.

 

I am not overly familiar with anything but Kimbers, but know there are a ton of other brands out there after doing some looking.  Thing is prices are ALL OVER THE PLACE.  I am seeing tons of Llama brand's for $350-$450, Sigs for $1,100, Kimbers for $900, (used online), but then it looks like the point of spending the $900+ might as well just buy new.

 

What are people's feelings on 1911 brands, I know Sig and Kimber are 2 big ones, Colt and Springfield Armory are another 2, and I think I like the S.A. Range Master for $769 right now at Vances.

 

Looking for good, bad, ugly info on these guns.  I believe I want to get one after Christmas when people need money to pay bills, or aren't buying and hopefully prices drop a tad more.  I do think I want stainless though, or at least want wood grips on something like the Range Master.

quick first hand feedback: i had a sig GSR (the precursor to the current line up of sig 1911's) and it was a great, solid pistol... i think when i got it a few years back, it was around 700~800. if you're looking for feedback on more pricey guns, i currently own a les baer TRS monolith, and that is a fine fucking pistol.  i dont think it quite measures up to a nighthawk or wilson combat in terms of aesthetic finishing, but i would put up the fit and parts matching with anyone out there short of a true custom.  that's a nice tight running gun, and is a solid grand+ less than wilsons and nighthawks.  take my feedback with a grain of salt... i know relatively little versus someone with real knowledge about 1911's.  i did a few hours of intense research on them before i started pulling my itchy trigger finger.

I like my Kimber but for that price that JBot just threw up I may have to try one of these Rugers for shits and giggles. Even if I don't like I am sure I can get my money back no problem.

Keeping your criteria in mind, house gun/plinker

I have been really impressed with the rugers and Taurus(yes Taurus ) For sub $800 I think they are both nice weapons. I have shot the Remington(very little) also and thought it was a nice gun.

When hovering around the $1k price- Iam biased. Colts, Sigs,

and Springfield Armory(mainly due to thier customer service)

I have a Springfield 1911.  An older Loaded model that I picked up new in 1998, it's been a great firearm for me ever since.  The finish is nowhere near perfect these days but it is hard won patina.  Failures have been very few, with the only ones being ammo related.  It has never broken mechanically but it has gotten a few sets of new springs and just this week I ordered a new safety lever and plunger spring as it was starting to get a little too easy to knock off safe.  It's not bad for a handgun that has shot well over 30K rounds of ammo.

Some of the cheap 1911 clones are worth it. I've seen claims that the Norinco copy is a good basis for a build. I think I remember people happy with the Brazil clone also. Either way, on the cheap stuff some of the parts changed might not fit properly. But that was yesteryear, and times change.

 

Right now I'd look at the Remington, the High Standard, the Iver Johnson and the Armscor Rock Island. Cheaper choices. Google up some reviews and see what they say. Particularly the Remington, since they made them in World War Two. (Although that was Remington RAND, not necessarily the same people.)

 

Even a Para Ordnance Expert single stack is around 500-560. But those might have slightly different barrel and ramp configs. Not bad, just different.

 

edit: Add the Springfield to the list, they sell for around 560 to 700.

edit again: drop the Armscor Rock Island from that list... had a co-worker get a real lemon on one...

Thanks guys, I cant click on Jbots links at work becasue most likely at least 1 is asian child porn, good try.  But I love Rugers and always have, just didn't realize they made 1911's to be honest.  I haven't gone to Vances or Gander yet to look, just Cabelas, and they are heavy on the Kimber and Sigs only in 1911s, so not a ton to look at.

 

When it comes down to it I would like a quality gun and it's another I plan to keep forever similar to VF1000, and that's one I looked at as well in Vance's flyer.

I have a rock island armory 1911 it was was first pistol. I had a few failure to feeds until I oiled the crap out of it. Since I oil the crap out of it now when cleaning it I have had no problems at all with it

further thoughts: if you're using it for home defense, DEFINITELY buy a shotgun first. if you already have one, and this 1911 is still going to be a night stand gun, may i suggest getting one with a rail?  mine has a rail and i have a laser/flashlight combo mounted and it's super neato.  or you could just grab a flashlight i guess.  here's a remington r1 enhanced with threaded barrel (for future suppressor potential) and rail (I think)

That is one I was looking at.  Shotty, AR, 3 9mm, and 1 380 are all around the house, along with 2 antique guns so pretty much ready ion that sense.  This is more because my wife and I both love the looks of 1911s and both have shot them and enjoy the gun as a whole.  So I figure it gives me a reason to get one, then keep it all shiney and purdy, kinda like Jbots mouth before I make a mess in it.

it's funny you should say that cause i always get complimented by dentists for having such excellent teeth alignment and structure (but not so much for being on top of flossing/brushing/cavities/etc lol).  i also never developed wisdom teeth unlike the rest of you mongoloids... what can i say? i am simply above you in evolution.

 

anyway, i think you should just buy the ruger SR1911 while it's cheap. or wait til black friday, i'm POSITIVE some better than average deal will come up on a quality 1911.

 

personally speaking, my dream home defense pistol is a FNX 45 tactical, USP 45 tactical, or MK23 (the latter only if my hands werent so damn cute and small and dainty) if not considering a 1911 (which i already have one i love).

I definitely like the dream home defense pistols you mentioned, I mean I made a kid, can I sell a testical to get one?  But for real about the Ruger SR1911 I will check it out tonight when I get home, if it's legit, done and done, unless I wait for Black Friday(I work so has to be an online deal or something that Cabelas has since its 1 mile from work).

definitely get a FFL lined up to do transfers. i highly recommend using dale at delta epsilon, i had a ruger SR22 with threaded barrel shipped to him (this was back when they were very hard to get a hold of) and it went great.  just be aware he has a new address and such so check his facebook for what to do on new stuff. you can get a hold of him there or if todd is still helping him out, you can hit him up.  again, check to see if he has a nice 1911 in his inventory or if he can get one for a similar price... the only nice thing about buying from an out of state dealer that has a gun listed cheap is you dont have to pay sales tax on the pistol.  you just pay, have them ship the gun to the ffl, pay the ffl for the transfer, and voila.  you just saved an assload of money.  and i know how much you love an assload.

Good idea on getting with Dale to see if he has anything left he didn't sell off when he closed the shop.  I have another local FFL I Just found out about 15 bucks, so that helps too.    With your description if I found one on Gunbroker, I can win the gun before doing the FFL paperwork and then get it shipped etc or is it best to get the FFL done first?

 

And Cabelas is still high, but not as bad as a month ago.  Was just there yesterday and today both, and actually their prices have dropped about $50.00 down here, I think they realized they were just price matching all day long and decided to lower them in general.  Granted not like Vance's low, but about same if not same as Gander, both of whom price match Vances.

 

Oh and I haven't had any issues with Woodbury myself(never used them) but I got a flyer from them, and holy shiat, ammo is cheaper than online, guns are about as cheap as anywhere, but in the end Fin and Vances still have the cheapest guns.  No one will price match Fin though because its 90 miles from here, only do 60 miles and in.

I got into 1911's recently and it is an addiction. They are the most beautiful pistol hands down, and the trigger and egros can't be beat. Completely customizable as well.

 

Only downside is the cost and fitting parts. Never go any shorter than a 4" barrel, keep it in .45ACP, and clean it and it will never give you problems.

 

As far as cost, you get what you pay for.  Most of the time in the more expensive pistols you're paying for better parts or features (Checkered MSH/Front strap, different cocking serations/carry cuts, etc.) Something to consider is the sights it comes with. If it has adjustable sights, you will always have to keep that style (Slide is modified to fit them). Same goes for Novak or GI. You can always change things you don't like, just more parts on a 1911 require fitting (Drop-in parts really don't exist for 1911s).

 

Manufacturer is pretty important IMO. Custom Shops, Springfield, Ruger, Remington all good stuff. I haven't seen anything come from Kimber recently that would make me want to buy one...

Just don't get the whole 1911 thing, don't get it at all. Yes I have shot 1911's, my son has 4 Colts. My bargain Sig seems to be every bit as tight tolerance as many ridiculously priced 1911's, and I bet it shoots just as well too with a shit ton more capacity. Were I to get a 1911 however, it would be the new Ruger or the Remington. Good luck on your qwest, I am betting that less expensive is your best overall option.

Damn, I wish I was in the market right now, because that looks like a killer deal.  Stainless and wood grips, both are musts for what I want, unless its a hella good deal.

I totally understand everything you said, and I never did either.  Like just this week I got a sudden urge for a nice 1911, and thinking that Ruger will be it.  I am thinking I will wait for Black Friday to see if KY Gun Co has any good sales, I think they did last year.  Not that 650 isn't a great price, but never know.
