Help with routes - Coshocton/Millersburg area twisties - any match for Hocking?

My friends wanted to ride out US-62 next weekend and hit the hills out in the Coshocton/Millersburg area.  I suggested some routes in Hocking instead, but they said they've ridden Hocking a million times.  I urged them to check out some of the back roads that I ride down there, and they were interested then, but I'm still trying to justify a good twisties ride up NE of Columbus.   Maybe even up towards Mohican. 

 

What roads/routes can you all point me towards? Can any routes up that direction compare to the best of Hocking?

 

I had mapped this out a few years ago, but never actually rode it since becoming obsessed with SE OH and West Virginia - http://goo.gl/maps/gK5ZC - basically 62 east from Danville to 83 south down south of I-70 to more familiar roads.

 

 

I had started a map of that area with a few county roads that someone recommended on here, but google didn't save it to "My Places" correctly (typical... have to create a map in my maps, or just save the URL from a driving directions link, not trying to save a directions link to "My Places.").  Something like Co Rd 22, Co Rd 19, Co Rd 323, Co Rd 324.

 

Any other good recommendations?

I'll have to look into all those back roads with google satellite view or street view to see if they are gravel....

The road off 77 to go to Salt Fork I remember had a lot of whoops n yips, lots of fun!!! The roads IN Salt Fork are like a gigantic Moto GP track, TONS of hugs sweepers, just watch for Rangers. All around that area. In the Coshocton area, look around Killbuck/Glenmont area, lots of little twister gems hidden in that area.

Second. Smiling as I have been guiding folks around the SR60 road closed all morning.....great fun being the do gooder.

Long time ago I posted the back way up to Spring Mtn and down the other side into Warsaw. Which is....take 60 south from USR62 and find Layland, little town on CR19....run 19 up into Spring Mtn. (Several houses and that's about it) pick up CR22 and down the hill to Warsaw...prolee 12 miles of great back road.

Other way around is, coming from the Metro Killbuck area-just follow SR60 to the road closed 500 feet sign....you'll see the bridge and barricades there. Turn left on CR24 and enjoy. Be careful of the dbl apex corners....smiled as a Harley managed to drift into the other lane at 35mph.....so take 24 until you get to CR28 (?)....you will come upon a crossroads sign....y'all know the plus sign sign....that'd be the road to turn right on and that brings you back to 36. Left is Coshocton, right takes ya to Warsaw.

Found a cruiser, makes more sense following wife's cruiser on it than riding the sportbike. More grins as I manage to drag heel on the cruiser.....guess I need to lift my feet off the pegs when going thru turns....

Oh yeah, CR19 the one one the right....not the thru one at the 90* corner. You'll turn right and cross a coupla bridges....then use THAT CR19....just remember to pipe the folks sitting on the deck.....ya gotta keep the citizens on edge.

I get blamed for all the bike traffic headed up Spring Mtn way...so may as well have y'all ice the cake.

More on SR60 by Killbuck.....above directions null and void after October 1.....they will be working on the low portion of road by the beaver lodge, near USR62and yajustcan't get past that one......mmm, unless ya use the road by the Sportsman's club and pick up Coshocton's 323....which may be a Twp rd......nice road if the pavement was any good. You've been warned.

I like further east I usually start in Magnolia and head towards amsterdamn. There is this one stretch of farm road that is 7 miles of 90 degree left then rights with plenty of elevation changes. I'll see if I can figure out what route it is and post later.

Yes, that sounds fantastic! A lot of people prefer the 35mph curves, but I really like a lot when there are plenty of tight 15-25mph curves thrown in there...

This, 520,& the littlecarbsbigsmiles co rd 19/22 routes - are these more medium to low speed curve packed roads than the tightest of the hocking area? When I get home on my pc, I'll try & plot out some routes. I think I'll try the co rd route, 715 walhonding rd, maybe some of 541 & 520, & may incorporate 83 south into it. The state route that's also called Hopewell Church Rd or something, NW of Cambridge, looked very promising.

Not sure if I'll stay in that area gor a more thorough ride, or take it south from Cambridge or 83 to south of I-70 to 669/78/685

The roads already mentioned are probably the best for this area but they really don't hold a candle to the roads surrounding Athens.  The new pavement alone down south is just too hard to ignore.  However, since Coshocton can be done in a day ride, we still enjoy them. 

 

We took 60 two weekends ago until we got to the detour and then grabbed the road on the left. 22? 24?  Can't remember but it did have some new pavement and some nice turns although lot of gravel.  We took that and then ended up on 83 so it wasn't a bad detour but still cuts off lots of 60.  

 

520 from 62 to 514 is really nice. Southern part of 83 is good but often has lots of traffic.  We did 19 once but road quality was pretty marginal from what I remember. 179 near 60 has a couple of nice turns but mostly straight although there is a 2 turn section that is really fun if you can catch it without traffic. 

 

715 had horrible pavement last time we did it (last year?).  Lots of junk in the road too.

Ahhh bummer. I did seem to have a lot of trouble plotting out a route of the real tight squiggleys on the maps in that area, but I do find often that the turns can be much tighter than they appear on the maps.

We still may try for a route up that way, but other than the tightest section of 60 (below 520), 520 btwn 514 & 62, 715 (still bad surface?), and a few others, it looks like I'd have to take 541 east of choshocton way over towards Cambridge until it turns into OH-658 Hopewelll Rd - which is a much longer stretch of decent looking frequent twisties, & then before Cambridge, head west on OH-209 Bloomfield Rd for more twisties.

Then before catching OH-83 off 209, jog west on Stoney Point Rd to catch a short set of twisties on 83 above where we would've intersected 83 on 209.

Then we could head south to 313(?) and then west to catch the very twisty part of 669 by the river,and then 555 south to 78 to 685,& maybe try to bypass the eastern section of 685 and try out a more twisty chip sealed Oregon Ridge Rd to intercept back at 685 at the really good part.

I might try that route in reverse since I know hocking/685/78/555/669 are great, and we could try out 83/209/658/541 and see if we want to continue or bail out on the quickest decent route home after 5 hours of riding

My favorite part of 83 is the 4/5 turns north of 209. 209 is fun and 658 was pretty clean last time I was on it, 3 or 4 weeks ago. If you're in the Cambridge area looking to kill some time, hit up High Hill Rd it's got some good turns and you'll pass right by my house.

715 had that chip and seal done to it years ago...and it has peeled off in spots. They are doing some patching on it now. More of a cruiser road right now I think....no more brisk runs unless truly paved.

Above comment, Mary17...prolee CR24, does take you to SR83 and you can veer off on 207, also tight turns and you come out on SR83 closer to Keene. Used to take CR12 then and out to New Bedford....haven't been on it in any recent time though. Yep on gravel. Around here just as you start to have fun....ya get a gravel patch to wake you up.

Not sure on 209 right now...all them road closings. Weekend or two ago....headed south on 83, and closed at New Concord, so west to Zanesville in a meandering sort of way....two more road closed encountered.....666 was closed, thinking it was 209(?) at 93....being old jus' can't remember stuff any more....let' s see was it pull clutch lever in and then shift or the other way around?

P.S. no Fall Tour....momma says no more tour groups. Prefers the smaller group rides. Itz a lot easier anymore to open the garage door and look at the sky and just ride. Too bad about getting the yard mowed, eh?
