I think it's more of a design compromise from trying to fit everything in a tight space. Therefore there are tight tolerances on the clutch/disc/flywheel package and short pedal travel is the result. (My gripe with the CTS-V is that the clutch begins to catch when the pedal is barely off the floor, aka low pedal reserve.)

 

The shifter is fine. But only fine.
