Free air subs usually sound 'loose'. It's a great option for space saving considerations. My car came with two 6" free air 'subs' in the back deck and they do a decent job. Just sounds kind of boomy. You'd be able to get much tigher and deeper bass from a nice 8" sealed sub. Space saving and relatively cheap? I really like Infinitys Basslink. You can find them for around $200 on EBay, new. It would probably take up as much room as just about any home built box with an 8" sub and amp.
