SPLN SUX
Ok so i went to change my belts in the beater today right. Simple right? Not if Ford can have anything to do with it! Rather than have a simple tensioner, it uses slides. So in order to replace the V-belt, i had to remove the other (which has the water pump on a slide...DRRR!) and then crank the pullies around untill it comes off. Then, i had to get the V-belt off. Now 2 bolts are what holds this thing in place. One pivot bolt(so heat stretched that it may has well be cross threaded) and the slide bolt. Now the slide bolt is put in through the slide first, then threaded into the alternator... which is made of aluminum... #6 steel bolt, aluminum thread... can you see where im going with this? So anyway, i fixed that genius set up and bought a new bolt, lock washer and lock nut. I cut the new bolt down so it was about 1/2" longer than the old one. Then i threaded it thru the alternator first... hand tight. Then once it was thru the slide, i put the lock washer and nut on there. THAT BITCH MIGHT AS WELL BE WELDED. Before the bolt wouldnt hold tight enough to keep the alternator from rotating... not now baby. I did a better engineering job in 17min than Ford did in how ever many years that car was in production. Consensis.... nurkvinny
"Friends don't let friends drive Fords." smile.gif When I was a kid, I used to think the reason my dad was anti-Ford was only because he was pro-GM. Then, I started turning wrenches beside him everyday in the shop. In general, Ford has their heads up their asses in the late 80's. And yes, GM has had their WTF-were-they-thinking moments too. smile.gif
Guest jpurdy2003
Even you Mustang guys gotta admit that any company that puts the Tempo into production, let alone for ten years, should have all of its corporate facilities incinerated. RangerTurbo
every car manufacturer is this way, but when i compare working on my ranger to workin on my Grand AM, its night and day a hell of a lot easier, i dont think GM could have made anything harder to work on

Quads arent too bad. Then again... i do know every size of every nut and bolt on it, and every tool you need to remove any part on the whole thing. I can do a timing chain in about an hour or 2. Rod bearings in about 4. It really isnt bad when youve done 6 gagillion times.

Except for replacing the oil pump. Putting on a new blower on my cobra was a piece of cake but in general, it would be a PITA to do anything else to the car. That's one reason I miss my LS1, it was fun and easy to work on...too bad I was working on it every weekend.

Avenger1647545502
The 2nd generation GTs are much better than the 1st generation ones. Wanna do an oil change on an 87 Escort GT? You have to reach AROUND the exhaust pipe to get at the filter which is directly above it, contorting your arm into a shape that gaurantees you can't get any grip on the damn thing. Then it POURS oil directly onto the exhaust pipe because the damn filter is horizontal instead of vertical. Plugs were fun too, Ford couldn't be bothered to machine a passage big enough to allow a socket into the head to tighten or loosen the spark plug.
