yellowsnake
i have a 97 chevy 4x4 and was wondering how hard it was to change the upper and lower ball joints? or if someone would do it on here and not cost me 5x what the parts did. Guest Removed
its not fun, have they been changed before? that makes it easyer, cause then it just a bolt in deal, if they are OE, air hammering the rivets out is what sucks. 351mach11647545510
I did them on my firebird. Had to rent a ball joint press. It was about $100 i think, but I got it back when I returned it (autozone). Wasn't too bad. I didnt have rivets to drill or knock off. 89Z24
i just changed mine in mine and the rivets and a nasty nasty thing! And you will not need a press for these...just a hammer and a floor.
Trouble Maker
if they are OE, air hammering the rivets out is what sucks. That has to be about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Those things must suck to get out.

Guest Removed
That has to be about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Those things must suck to get out. air hammer, wide chisel head, shear the tops of the rivets off, take the punch type head, knock the rest of the rivets out, bolt in the new ball joints. Ive have done these in 2 hours before both sides. after you do so many you get a pattern down (91 formula)and there are alot of ball joints out there that you press in and out, then there are some, You have too buy the whole fucking control arm. Yeah, the front arms on the B5 VAG chassis (Jetta, A4, S4) are known to go bad easy. The boots rip easy. You can't buy just the boots or joints. I guess that's why a set of eight control arms and the outter tie rod ends are ~$450 now (that's cheap for these cars), because they've had to make and sell so many.
