Well, this will be my first time building an engine. and my dad, who is a mechanic hasn't built up a motor in 15 years so he really doesn't know all the new companies and parts out there. What I am on here asking for is some ideas on parts. We can assemble everything ourselves it's just what to get is what we're stuck on. The block we have is a 350 but it will more than likely need to be bored 30 over so we where thinking of making it a 383. I was looking at this whole package here and was wondering if you guys had any opinions on it. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ESP%2DB12011030&N=700+4294908216+4294840140+4294889107+4294925232+4294919598+115&autoview=sku. We also need some heads and at this point we are totally lost on what to get here. I was looking at the 195cc or 210cc AFR heads but they seem expensive. Any advice on where to go with the heads is appreciated, or any advice at all for that matter.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking of all that when I made the first post. The car is an 87 Camaro, with a 400 transmission that will be redone. We're also not sure on the rear end gears either. Our goals for the car is just a sunny weekend, streetable race car. Gas mileage really isn't a concern but we'd don’t want to use racing fuel. 1/4 mile time would like to be around mid to low 12's. Top speed doesn't need to be to high, just enough to have fun with.

One of those package deals is probably a good way to go, everything is matched up to work well with all of the other parts. If you do some research online, you can find out what were some good factory heads and what they came in/on if you want to save some cash, instead of blowing a ton of money on aftermarket. With a non-od tranny like a turbo 400 you really will be unhappy with low rear end gears if you have any plans of driving on the street, I would go with a 3.72 or something near there, probably nothing past a 4.00

You won't need to run race gas unless you are running a retarded compression, or any kind of forced induction/nitrous.

Keep in mind that stroker motors mean you won't be able to turn as many rpm's, so that limits top end even more. It would still be a ton of fun so long as you don't plan on taking it far down the highway.

If you keep it at a somewhat low compression then nitrous may be the way to go for blasts down the track, but keeping it more streetable.

There is endless options, and many different end results.

Depending on your goal, and your budget. And dont toss out the crate motor idea either...Just start researching, Car craft, Hot rod, etc. The 205 AFRs are rather large, unless you plan on building a hell of a street motor with a big cam. I have several SBC cars that ive put together over the years, and your welcome too check them out And talk about different combos,LMK

Go to these 2 places. Read. :)

This is the biggest, by far, collection of actual small block combinations with dyno results...

These guys will teach you a lot.

Is there anything like that out there for bbc's?

Get David Vizards book "how to build max performance small block chevys on a budget" in the back he has 10 proven budget builds with specs and avg costs. he speaks in plain english not in engineering lingo and he knows his shit. If you follow his book you can go low 12's high 11's in your third gen on pump gas and still drive it to work/school everyday. Ditch the th400 trans idea though, they use alot of hp, get a th350 or a 200r4 and a decent converter. If you do the overdrive you can use lower gears and benefit both ways, I run a 4.10 and 70mph is right around 3200 rpm with 28" tires, not too much higher than my 85 z28 does with the stock 215/65 tires and t-5 5speed.

Thanks for all the info. Over the weekend we went to performance research or something like that on Westerville and innis. He was telling us about a callie 383 kit. Does anyone know if this is a good kit to get? Even though the kit isn't on their site here is a link to their site anyway http://www.callies.com/index.htm

For the top end, we where looking at a trick flow kit here is the link. http://www.trickflow.com/product/enginekits/pr_enginekits_chevy.asp# Go to technical specs and look at TFS-K314-500-450. What do you guys think about it? and again, any advice is appreciated.
