V8 Beast
I have been talking to a few transmission specialists and I'm getting different answers. I may go mod crazy and change my entire setup. In doing so I need a bullet proof tranny. A few say a built 4l60e will be fine, others are saying I should start looking into a 4l80e. The 4l60e's I have been looking at can hold up to around 700hp. I drive the hell out of my car. If I have a tranny that can hold 700hp how long will it hold up for a 675hp car?? Some say its fine, others say it will break before the end of next summer. Any opinions on what I should do? I'm not worried about money, because cutting corners with the tranny just leaves room for disaster. But I also want a transmission that will not have my wife cussing me out everytime she rides in my car.
Guest Hal
I'd say it should hold well for you especially if you're looking for roll racing. Dig racing may show that tranny an easy way to hell if you do it a lot. If money isn't a big issue you may want to go with a little stronger tranny, will leave room for more mods if nothing else. It's best to go all out now rather than do it again later.

AJ
takes more power to turn an 80 than a 60 so keep that in mind, plus it weighs more

RUTAN TA1647545492
Brian, call Rossler and quit messing around! He can build you a 4L65e with a trans brake and you can pm Koolrayz and ask him how he likes it.
MrMeanGreen
Agreed. Quit bullshitting around, take the fucking thing to Rossler, and prepare to have your bulletproof 4L60E that can and will handle a trans-brake.
slowdiesel
4l60's are a nice trans.. I say build it. We have one behind a Cummins, and it holds up well. Its pretty much stock, but it still puts out some torque. We just did it too see what kind of Fuel Mileage we could get. We did break a input shaft but that was stock, and it was done during play time!!
Guest nasty57
have a 700hp 4l60e built by mickey at bowtie transmissions. Total with all the best TCI componets, TCI converter and a race front pump was about 1400 (used my racer discount at jegs to get better prices on the tranny componets and converter). Although i took the tranny out and brought it to him. Still compared to what else is out there i think i got a good deal. Also if i have any probems he is local and i can take it to him. Good point, local is good. I'm going to stay with a 4l60e. Thanks guys. I have a few companies that I am working with now. I noticed just about all of them use the exact same parts. And the ones I am working with got great reviews on ls1tech. The warranty, and location will be the deal breaker.
RUTAN TA1647545492
xx-you should change your hp/tq numbers to fwhp instead of rwhp.
Billiumss
As a lot of CR members would say "Rossler" FTW I tuned a guy with a 383 & Rossler and it's pretty much bullet proof. N/A he does 11.0x @ 122 MPH and 150 shot around 10.4x @ 134 MPH. It shifts perfect at WOT, nice and firm but not too much at PT. I think he spent around $2,500-3,000. koolrayz
you say they all pretty much use the same parts but thats not true Rossler has a custom3-4 clutch pack, and many other upgrades that are not available on the open market. not to mention he will refresh the trans for 500$ plus hard parts. call Carl 330-530-5000

Have you looked into CPT? http://www.cahallperformancetransmissions.com/ From what I've read on camaross.com, they have great customer service, 6mo warranty and use better parts than other shops. They also offer a neat Customer Freshen Up deal in case have the tranny pulled out a few years down the road and want to have it inspected and "freshened" up while you're getting your stroker kit installed. I am looking into these guys for my latest modifications. They won't state a definative horsepower limit, but they give a good explanation to why here: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=467120 Basically, tranny holding capacity seems to depend more on 60' times than hp is what they say. I would be interested in what you have in the end so please keep us posted or PM me the details.
V8 Beast
I've looked into a bunch of them. I actually broke my 3rd gear mid run, and last week I went to spin the tires, just to let the engine run a little, and lost second gear. Right now I'm leaning towards Rossler because a lot of 9 second cars are using them with no issues.
