Who killed the electric car?

I was flipping through Starz on Demand tonight and stumbled across this new movie called "Who killed the electric car". If you go to 494 (starz on demand if you have WOW) and got to the new releases it's in there.

1 1/2 hours long. Talks about the California smog stuff and the EV1 that GM introduced, leased them out to people, then when the lease was up, the person couldn't buy the car. GM took the cars and scrapped them.

It's a pretty interesting movie.

Yeah, it is, looks like they just wanted to look like they were making progress in the "electric vehicle market".

You don't see any other company offering them do you? GM was alone on that one and took a financial bath on the project. You can look at it now and say that it would be cool if they had continued to offer them in the light of the current fuel prices, the Tesla Roadster, and fuel economy standards. But at the time large groups of people didn't care about it. Everyone was buying up large SUV's because they were cool and gas was cheap. Why would you want an electric car that could only go ~120 miles on a charge, take 8 hours to recharge fully, and whose range would diminish in colder weather when gas is $1.00 a gallon?

That movie was made by people that are 'green' fanatics who feel big industry is hiding some majic technology that would solve all the worlds energy problems. While some things may be true in the movie, there's also much that is stretched.
